Sir, —I said “.that settlers were driven out by slum conditions, driven off the land by rack renters, evicted by agents of the absentee landlord, etc.” I never used the word “racketeers,” although when, it appeared in newspaper reports I said to my benchmate, “The inevitable result of feeding ‘lmperial sentiment’ on gangster pictures.” I corrected the report iu manypapers, but the subsequent statements of my colleagues rendered this unnecessary everywhere. And I take issue anyhow with the assumption that the inhabitant of a slum tenement is vicious and the occupant of a mansion the last word in virtue. —I am, etc.,
