The North Island’s last hope ot winning the 1932 New Zealand women’s golf championship was destroyed this morning when Mrs. H. Collinson, of .Manawatu, was beaten by Miss Betty Rutherford (Hawarden). It was an interesting and keenly fought game won by a putt on the 18th green. In the other sem - final Mrs. J. C. Templer (M annate) easily defeated Miss H. Jkoughnan. of Christchurch. Miss Rutherford and Mrs. Templer will contest the final to-morrow. There is a consensus of opinion among those who regularly attend Dominion championships that seldom if ever before has a meeting afforded s many close finishes as have been seen at Highfield during the present tournamerit. . To-day the weather was again perfeet, and the large crowd of spectators included many who arrived at Timaru yesterday specially to see the matches. Manv more are arriving to-night ami early to-morrow to witness the contest for the final. To-day’s results were , Miss B. Rutherford (Hawarden) beat Mrs. H. Collinson (Manawatu), 1 up. i Mrs. J. C. Templer (Waimate) beat Miss H. Loughnan (Christchurch), 6 and 5. Equally Matched. The match between Miss Rutherford and Mrs. Collinson was keenly fought ail the way. This was Miss Ruther'ford’s first experience of playing in the concluding stages of a Dominion championship. She was champion of the Christchurch Ladies’ Club in 1931, reached the final in the Otago provincial tournament and in the South Canterbury championship in 1932, and won the North Canterbury and [Hawarden championships some weeks I The players were equally matched. (Miss Rutherford frequently outdrove (her opponent, who was not as safe with [her second shots and not as accurate ■with her masbie as she has been on previous occasions. Both showed great skill in getting out of difficulties. Miss (Rutherford, except on two occasions, putted very well, and Mrs. Collinson, except at the ISth, gave away nothing on the greens. I The first hole was halved in 4’s. Mrs. Collinson wou the 2nd, halved the 3rd, and lost the short 4tb, which Miss (Rutherford did in bogey 3. Gaine Becomes Exciting. Tire sth was halved, and then the game became really exciting. At the Knob, where the players drive up the hillside, Miss Rutherford was a little short with her tee shot. Mrs. Collinson was-in some long grass to the left of the green. The crowd applauded when Miss Rutherford sank her approach for a birdie 2, while Mrs. Collinson’s second shot lay 3 inches from the pin. Mrs. Collinson struck trouble at the next hole. Her drive was bunkered; she cut out, but .did not reach the green with her third. Her fourth overran the green, and she gave the hole to Miss Rutherford, who was lying handy to the pin with her third. The eighth was halved in bogey 4’s. At the ninth Miss Rutherford’s long drive found -the rough, but she played out almost to the green. Her approach putt lay 4 feet from the pin, but she missed the putt, and Mrs. Collinson after being bunkered with her second holed a 20foot putt to win the hole in 4, making her 1 down at the turn. Miss Rutherford went out in 38. At the long tenth Miss Rutherford was on the green ia three well-played shots. Mrs. Collinson topped her third, overran the green with her fourth, played back too strongly, and after failing with her putt gave up the hole. At the eleventh Miss Rutherford was on the green witli her tee shot, her opponent, being short with her second. Mrs. Collinson, Laid Miss Rutherford a dead stymie and wou the bole 3—l. The twelfth was badly played, both being in the rough, and the hole was eventually won by Mrs. Collinson in 6, and the match was again all square. The next hole was halved. At the fourteenth Miss Rutherford’s drive landed in a deep bunker to the left of the green. She played a. flue shot to the .green and her third lay on the lip of the cup. Her opponent was first in the rough, then in a sand bunker, and lost the hole, making her 1 down, i At the fifteenth Miss Rutherford, putting her approach putt within 18 inches of the pin, halved the hole, and also halved the sixteenth. Disaster befell her at the critical seventeenth. After n good drive her second was poor, her third ran into a bunker, and playing out too strongly her fourth fell among the spectators beyond the green. She made a valiant effort to retrieve her position, but lost the hole, her opponent being on the green in three well-played shots. All square.. At the eighteenth tee both got good drives, but Canterbury supporters had an anxious moment w v hcn Miss Rutherford’s second landed in the rough, while Mrs. Collinson's sal up nicely in the fairway. However. Miss Rutherford chipped out neatly and landed on the green. She putted to within 6 inches of the hole, while Mrs. Collinson was surprisingly short with her first putt, and missed her second, giving Miss Rutherford the hole and the match. One-sided Contest. Mrs. T. C. Temnler’s splendid approaching and her ability nt keeping on the fairways gave her an easy victory over Miss Haltnai Loughnan, whose shots lacked accuracy and whose long drives frequently found the rough. Mrs. Templar won the first eight holes, nix of which she did in bogey figures. Rluckily fighting an uphill game, Mis.s Loughnan won the 9th and the 10th. At the 11th Miss Loughnan holed a long putt, to halve the hole, and won the 12th in bogey 5, reducing Mrs. Templet's lead to f> tip. The match ended at the 13th, which Mrs. Templer won in bogey 4. The final over 36 holos will l>c played to-morrow between Mrs. Templer and Miss Ttntherford. BOGEY MATCH The second bogey match of the tournament was played to-day. Miss M.
