SHEARERS’ DISPUTE

Position of Maori Workers APPEAL TO GOVERNMENT Representatives of practically all Maoris engaged in the shearing industry waited upon the Minister of Labour, Hon. A. Hamilton, yesterday morning to’ask that the Government intervene in the shearers’ dispute and endeavour to bring about a settlement. The members of the deputation pointed out that the Maori shearers were at a great disadvantage when it came to individual bargaining over conditions and rates of pay, and unless a settlement were arrived at confusion would continue. They suggested the matter be referred to a tribunal. The Minister said he would confer with the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes. He hoped to be able to give the deputation a reply to its representations at an early date.
