The disastrous effect of the world depression on shipbuilding is strikingly revealed by Lloyd’s returns for the qarter ended September 30. which show that 901,067 tous are. under construction in the world, of which 238,433 are in the United Kingdom, the lowest ever recorded, and 662.634 abroad, the lowest since 1911. Moreover. the British figure includes 150,000 tons on which work is suspended. Half this tonnage is represented by the giant Cunarder. Another striking feature Is the tonnage of motor-ships building abroad, 385,060, which exceeds the steam tonnage by 277.574, whereas only 24.984 tons arc building in the United Kingdom, compared with 212,819 tons of steamships.
