MINISTER RETIRES

Rev. James McCaw Resigns The resignation of the Rev. Janies McCaw as minister of Knox Church, Lower Hutt, after nearly twenty-four years of service, has been received by the Wellington Presbytery. The senior minister of the Lower Hutt Churches, Mr. McCaw has always been looked upon as a leader in inter-church activities, and great regret will be felt at his retirement. Mr. McCaw landed in Wellington in September, 1880, having arrived from Scotland with his parents and eight other members of the family. Moving to Milton, most of the family engaged in farming pursuits, but in 1891 Mr. McCaw undertook home mission work at Oteramika and Forest Hill, near Invercargill. In 1898 he moved with his

wife and family to Pahiatua, where he was ordained. His parish then extended from the Palmerston track, on the west coast, to Ohongo, on the east coast, and from Eketahuna, in the south, to the Ngawataruru bridge, in the north. He moved to Martinborough in 1905, and remained there for four years, when he accepted a call to his present church. For forty-two years he has been in the service of his Church, and for the past thirty-four years has been connected with the Wellington Presbytery. He served for many years on the Presbyterian Orphanage Board? the Scots College Board, the Church Extension Committee, and the Beneficiary Committee of the Church. He was also a chaplain during the war. Mr. McCaw has been ably assisted by his wife, who for many years conducted the senior girls’ Bible classes, and has been president of all the women’s work in the church. She was also president of the Lower Hutt branch of the Plunket Society. Mr. McCaw’s future movements are as yet undecided.
