Pleading guilty in the Upper Hutt Police Court yesterdaj’ to charges of operating and permitting to be operated motor lorries without heavy trafiie licenses, Peter Robertson was convicted and ordered to pay costs on both charges by Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M. The report of the Lower Hutt Borough Council works committee shows that the total expenditure on unemployment relief by the borough was £1635 12/-, while the expenditure on wages by the Government was £19,689/8/3. “It is a very commendable action,” said Mr. AV. H. Wpodward, S.M., in the Upper Hutt Police Court yesterday, when a defendant, who was charged with having defaulted the unemployment levy for more than one month, showed that he had voluntarily surrendered his war pension some years ago. The case was adjourned on the condition that defendant applied for his pension to pay up the arrears. FINDING A MARKET Relief Worker’s Method Pleading straitened circumstances, Lewis Denby, relief worker, asked for time to pay a fine of 10/- which was imposed on him in the Upper Hutt Magistrate’s Court yesterday for failing to have a driver’s license. On being asked by the magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., whether he still had the motor-cycle, defendant replied that he did not have it now. “Have you sold it?” asked the magistrate. “Not exactly,” replied the defendant. “I have exchanged it.” “Got another one?” queried the magistrate. “No,” responded the defendant. “As a matter of fact, I exchanged it for a car.” Defendant went on to explain that it was not his intention to run tbe car, but to sell it, as he could not sell his motorcycle. Time was allowed to pay. H. Woodward, S.M., wanted to know what the position was for a would-be motorcyclist. “The Act provides for a licensed driver to be in the front seat beside the learner,” replied Inspector J. E. Ainsworth, of the Main Highways Board. “What about tbe motor-cyclist?” asked the magistrate. “He should get into a paddock,” responded the inspector. Defendant was convicted and discharged. MOTORING CASES Upper Hutt Court “I suppose she was of more danger to herself than anyone else,” remarked Mr. W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Upper Hutt Magistrate’s Court yesterday, in imposing a fine of 30/- and costs ou Moreen Stewart, who was. charged with, driving' a motor-cycle at a speed and in a manner which might be dangerous. Defendant did not appear. According to evidence, defendant was riding a motor-cycle with a male pillion rider at about 40 m.p.h. through tbe Taita Gorge. When stopped, she had said that she was learning to ride, and that driving a high-powered cycle was a temptation to speed. Stanley Charles Schirnack and Hector P. Merie were each charged with driving at a speed and in a manner which might be dangerous, and were fined £2 and 30/respectivaly. Neither appeared. According to evidence given by Constable C. Stewart, Sehirnack was followed in a car and found to be doing 45 to 50 m.p.h. in the Upper Hutt borough, between Trentham and Maori Bank. Merie was followed at 40 m.p.h., which be continued through the Taita Gorge, at the same time cutting in and out. TO AID RELIEF FUNDS Concert at Upper Hutt In aid of the Upper Hutt Citizens’ Relief Committee, a successful concert, was given in the Cosy Theatre, Upper Hutt, on Sunday evening. Tbe theatre was well filled, and the funds benefited by £3 13/10. The Upper Hutt Municipl Band, under Mr. L. Neighbours, played several items, and the programme comprised: Songs, Miss 1. Shell, Mrs. Hirschorne, Mr. O. Dyer, and Master Donald Smith; vocal duet. Misses Shell;, recitation. Mirs Ngaire Spearman: cornet solo with band accompaniment, Mr. V. McPherson. SOCIAL EVENING Many members and friends accepted the invitation of the Belmont Progressive Association to a combined business and social evening on Saturday.. The chairman, Mr. Cowie, briefly reviewed the work during the last few months. Although efforts to secure a reduction in railway fares for tbe workers bad not been' successful, it had been the means of interesting kindred societies in the Valley, and had secured their support. Improvements had been made to footpaths, and the train service made easier for school children. A financial statement was given, and the chairman asked for the support, ami interest of residents, as tbe work of the association was beneficial to everyone in the district. Special reference was made to Councillor AV. V. Dyer, who bad worked bard for the district. -. . , The social programme comprised: Miss Tris Austin, dramatic recitals; Miss Mirt Pocknail and Miss Ella Birrnll. piano ducts; Mr. Poeknali, humorous recitals: Miss Joan Cowie, recitation; Mr. Cecil Natusch and Miss Birrcll, songs. All items were of a high standard. A supper was served by the ladies, and a community sing of old favourites followed. The visiting artists received a vote of thanks lor their assistance.
