Revolver-Shot Signal ROBBERY SUSPECT Surrounded by Police By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Oct. 11. The arrest made last evening at Christchurch in connection with the week-end £lOOO jewellery robbery was carried out under dramatic circumstances. As a result of investigations a number of police waited near a certain house In Kilmore Street. When the suspected man appeared a revolver shot was fired as a signal by the leader of the police squad. The police then closed on tbe man ami chased him, it is said, through a yard. He ran into the arms of detectives waiting at the other entrance. Another man who was present was It is understood that some of the stolen property has been recovered. As a sequel, Gordon Webb Hazeldine, aged 23, a contractor, of Sydenham, was charged this morning with breaking and entering the premises of Messrs. G. Coates and Co., Ltd., and committing theft. Accused was remanded till October 20. Gold and silver-ware, worth oyer £lOO, was stolen on Monday evening from Mason, Struthers and Co., hardware merchants. The intruder got through a window, but found himself trapped in the lift-well. He climbed up the greasy ropes on to the floor above, unscrewed the locks on the side door to admit his accomplice. They packed two new suitcases with goods and decamped. About £3O worth oL tobacco was stolen from the store of O. M. Smith, Madras Street, and £l6 worth of tobacco from a shop owned by Mrs. E. A. Phillips. Wilson's Road.
