GIFT TO ACADEMY
Striking Portrait Bought ALSO FINE LANDSCAPE A very distinguished piece of portrait painting has come into the possession of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts through the generosity of Mrs. R. F. Blair, who has purchased Mr. Leonard .H. Booth’s portrait of Professor James Shelley for the academy’s permanent collection. Mr. Booth’s portrait occupies the place of honour in the present art exhibition and must be regarded not only as a brilliant portrait study, but as a considerable artistic achievement which will take its place with ease among Wellington’s permanent works of art. By funds wliich are being made available by the W. L. Meek bequest, the academy will also acquire ,for its permanent collection Mr. Archibald F. Nicholls’s large and brilliant landscape, “Peninsular Winter,” which many regard as this distinguished artist’s most important picture painted in New Zealand. The city collection will be greatly strengthened by the inclusion of such important works of art as these.
