The entertainment committee of the Lower Hutt Mayor’s Relief Fund has decided to take advantage of the oiler of the Hutt Valley High School beadmaster, Mr. H. P. Kidson, to repeat the school concert on Thursday week, the proceeds to go to the relief funds. Appreciation from the Lower Hutt Post Office dance committee of work carried out ,in respect of appliances used in connection with a dance was received by the Petone and power Hutt Gas Lighting Board last night. For the period ended September 8, the Lower Hutt Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out on three occasions. No great damage was done. Motor, appliances, street alarms, and house bells .are in good order. PETONE POSTMASTER New Appointment Made Mr. W. B. Rowan, at present postmaster at Otautau, near Invercargill, has been appointed to fill the vacancy for postmaster at Petone. Mr, Rowan began as a telegraph messenger at Ashburton in 1889, and in 1901 was appointed a cadet in the learners’ gallery at Invercargill. In September of that year he moved back to Ashburton, from whence he was transferred to Auckland in IJUo. After serving there for a year, he was sent to Taihape, where he remained un-til-his transfer to Wellington in May, 1909. Mr. Rowan joined the Expeditionary Force in September, 1917. returning to New Zealand in December. 1918, when he went to Wanganui. .He remained there for three years, when he was promoted to supervisor telegraphist at Hastings. He was next appointed postmaster at Otane in 1924, and in 1926 was appointed to his present position. He will take up his new appointment within the next few weeks. , SCHOOL CRICKET GAMES Hutt Valley Competitions Competition matches under the auspices of the Hutt Valley Primary .Schools’ Cricket Associatiou will begin next Friday. Teachers are requested to send results- of all matches played to the honorary secretary immediately. The following is the draw for the first two weeks:— Senior; —October 14 and 21: Petone Centra] v. "Petone West (Petone No. 1); Hutt Central v. Eastern . Hutt. (Hutt No. 1); Petone Convent v. Waiwetu (Petone No. 2). Junior. —October 14: Petone Central v. Petone West (Petone No. 3); Hutt Central v. Eastern Hutt (Hutt No. 2) ; Wilford v. Waiwetu (Hutt No. 3) ; Randwick v. Hutt Convent (Wilford). October 21: Petone Central r. Waiwetu (Petone No. 3) ; Hutt; Central v. Petone West (Hutt No. 2); Wilford v. Hutt Convent (Wilford) ; Randwick r. Eastern Hutt (Hutt No. 3). RELIEF WORKERS’ PLOTS Protest Against Trespassing A protest against people trespassing on the garden • plots being cultivated by relief workers was voiced by Councillor W. Wilson at the last meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council. “It is pleasing to note the number of plots being cultivated by tbe relief workers in the district,” he said. ’.“Many of the men are taking a keen interest in their gardens, and it is a pity that people should trespass on them.” The mayor. Mr. ”W. T. Strand, considered that there was only a small amount of vandalism in the district. EASTBOURNE GAS SUPPLY Canvass for Consumers Details of a canvass held at Eastbourne •to ascertain, the number of residents who would be willing to take gas if it were reticulated in the district, were laid before the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board last night. Some 200 replies were received, and were allocated as follow: —130 cookers, 37 caliphonts, 16 coppers, 63 gas rings, 5 yas heaters, and 24 hot water storage heaters. “It is a wonderful response,” commented Mr. W. T. Strand. GAS BOARD AND COUNCIL Conference Decided On Held over from a previous meeting, the report of Mr. G. J. J. Foil on the commercial value of services rendered by the Petone Borough Council to the Petone and Lower Hutt Gas Lighting Board, was briefly commented ou by the board last night. ' , Mr. W. T. Strand moved that the board arrange, a conference as requested between the Petone council and tbe board, ■ and the motion was carried. - Mr. Strand further remarked that there were several members of the board who were also members of the Petone council. “I suppose they will have a vote each way.” said the chairman, Mr. W.
