OPENING NEW SEASON
Kelburn Croquet Club ' In spite of the uncertain weather, there was a good attendance of members and visitors at the opening of the Kelburn Croquet Club’s season yesterday afternoon. The Mayoress, Mrs. T. C. A. Hislop, was present to perform the ceremony of driving the first ball through the hoop. Mrs. Hislop, who was presented with a bouquet of deep pink tulips, made a brief speech, in which she remarked that the game of croquet was increasing in popularity, and the standard of play was remarkably high. The keenness of the members of the Kelburn club would, she felt sure, lead to a successful and enjoyable season, and she had much pleasure in declaring the lawns open for play. The president, Mrs. Wallis, who was presented with a bouquet of delicate pink tulips, welcomed Mrs. Hislop, the other visitors, and the members, and wished them a pleasant afternoon. To the members she wished a successful and pleasant season, and freedom from northerly winds. She read a message from Mr. Ross, of the New-. Zealand Croquet Council, and good wishes and apologies from other members and frieuds who were, unable to be present. Appropriate speeches Were miide by Mrs. Austin, president of the Wellington Croquet Association, by Mr. W. H. Bennett, the Deputy-Mayor, and by Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P. for the district. The visitors included Mrs. McKenzie, secretary of the Wellington Croquet Association, Mrs. Bennett, and Lady Luke.
Afternoon tea was served in the pavilion, and competition games took place during the afternoon.
