CHARGES OF THEFT

Relief Fund Money By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Oct. 11. Charges of theft of some moneys granted from the Mayor's fund for the relief of dependants of men imprisoned following the tramway strike disturbances' and of forgery of receipts for the amounts misappropriated were laid against Herbert Edwin Barnsley in the Christchurch I J olice Court today. Barnsley, it was alleged, had been given a sum of 27/- for distribution and had failed to account for 21/-. He had, it. was alleged, forged receipts from persons who should have received the money. He was also charged with misappropriation of another amount, 9/-. Accused pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial on the forgery charges. On tbo summary charges of theft he was convicted, sentence being deferred. Bail was allowed of £lOO, with one surety of £lOO.
