Pioneering Work With Rev. Mother Aubert SISTER MARY CARMEL There died at the Home of Compassion, Island Bay, yesterday, Sister Mary Carmel Gallagher, who was one of the late Mother Mary Aubert’s original companions in her charitable work at Jerusalem, on the Wanganui River, and who has been attached to the Home of Compassion at Wellington since its opening 25 years ago. The late Sister Mary Carmel, who was 72 years of age, joined Mother Mary Aubert 48 years ago. It took her three days to travel up the Wanganui River to the tiny village which was later to become so well-known as the centre of the Rev. Mother’s work. While at Jerusalem, Sister Mary Carmel, who became a fluent speaker of Maori, endeared hersolf to all, Europeans and Maoris alike. She remained at Jerusalem until 1907, when she came to Wellington for the opening of the Home of Compassion. Quiet of manner. Sister Mary Carmel was a woman of saintly disposition. and was extremely gifted. Her good works in connection with the Home of Compassion will be long remembered. The late Sister Mary Carmel was born in County Donegal, Ireland. She has no surviving relatives in New Zealand. Solemn Requiem Mass will be celebrated (.o-morrow at 9 a.m.
