REMOVAL OF PARAPET

City Engineer’s Building The work of removing the parapet surrounding the City Engineer’s block of buildings at the corner of Mercer Street and Jervois Quay was commenced this week. The parapet is of solid brickwork, and the weight of masonry is considerable. In a few months’ time the City Council will attend to the Town Hall portico and tower, plans for the reconstruction of which have already been prepared and approved by the City Engineer, Mr. G. A. Hart. The architects are Messrs. S. W. Fearn and W. M. Page. The plans provide for a “stump” tower to take the Blundell clock, and a modified entrance portico, disposing altogether of the existing heavily-pillared portico.
