Opening of Rowing Season SOCCER, RUGBY, GOLF The opening of the rowing season will take place to-day, and a number of tennis clubs in the city and • sub-, urbs will also officially commence their games. In addition, there will be Rugby attractions at Athletic Park, Soccer at Kilbirnie Stadium, League football at Petone, and au attractive golfing programme. Rugby Matches. . A match which should attract a good crowd at Athletic Park will be the game to be played by fifteen Rugby players who are In the ranks of relief workers and the Wellington junior representative team. A curtain-raiser will be supplied by another team of relief workers and a Miramar junior team. The gate takings will go toward assisting Rugby players who are among the unemployed, and admission will be by silver coin. The Wellington Football Club will hold its annual competition for the Levin Shield on the Emerson Street ground this afternoon, 'The trophy goes to the player gaining most points in running, line-kicking, punting, placekicking, and drop-kicking. There will also, be an inter-grade contest between teams of four in dribbling, passing, and relay running with the balh Tennis Matches. A number of tennis clubs in the city and suburbs will celebrate the opening of the season to-day. Among them will be Kelburn; Hataitai, Technical College, Wellington North, and Johnsonvllle. . , Tournaments at the Miramar Hard Courts Club and Victoria College Club .not completed last Saturday will be continued to-day. Opening of Rowing Season. The rowing season in Wellington will be opened by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, at 2.30 o’clock, this afternoon. The official ceremony wiE take place on the balcony of the Star Boating Club. During the afternoon the Redding Shield Regatta will be rowed if the weather is favourable. There will be six events over a quarter-mile course. In the event of rough water a series of whale-boat races will take place, and the regatta will be postponed until Petone Rowing Club’s opening on the following Saturday, when, if conditions are still unsuitable, then at which ever end of the harbour is favourable on Saturday, October 15. Association Football. The first game for the Williams’ Soccer trophy will take place at the Stadium, Kilbirnie, to-day, when Marist and Watersiders will meet. In the event of a drawn game after ninety minutes, extra time will be played. At the conclusion of the game the trophy will be presented to the winning team by Mr. A. Williams, after whom the trophy has been named. . Women’s Hockey. Two ■'Wellington Maori women’s hockey representative teams will leave for Carterton this morning to play two Wairarapa Maori representative teams. The senior team is to play for the Hunter Cup. These matches will conclude the 1932 Wellington women’s hockey season. The city members of the teams are to asemgle at Bowen Street at 10 o’clock this'morning. Rugby League. The Wellington Rugby League wijl hold the final for the Knock-out Cup at Petone this afternoon, when Petone will meet Newtown. The Golf Card. An interesting • golf programme has been arranged for the week-end. A match will be played between Hutt and Wellington to-day, the A teams meeting on the Hutt links, and the B teams at Heretaunga, The Miramar club will send a team to the Wairarapa, playing Rototawai this afternoon, and an all-day match against Masterton to-morrow. A Watt Cup match will be played between Titahi and Waiwetu on the Titahi links to-day. A match in the Mary Alward Cup competition will be played between Waiwetu and Titabi Bay Ladies’ Clubs on the Waiwetu links to-day. The Paekakariki and Otaki Ladies’ Clubs will play a match against each other on the Otaki links to-day. The Paekakariki and Manor Park Ladies’ Clubs will meet in a Mary Alward Cup match on the Paekakariki course tomorrow. A men’s foursome medal match will be played on the Shandon links this afternoon. The Manor Park Ladies' Club will play the qualifying round for the senior and junior championships this afternoon. The Shandon Ladies’ Club will play an L.G.U. round this afternoon, and a flag competition to-morrow. Road Cycling. Senior and junior members of the Poneke Amateur Cycling Club will take part at Kilbirnie and Seatoun this afternoon in a combined 19-mile handicap. The race will begin at 2.30 p.m. Harriers. The final club runs of the Wellington harrier season will be held to-day. They will be training outings, held in preparation for the Olympic club’s 20-mile marathan, which will be held at Trentham a week hence. “AU. Williams’’ Soccer Trophy. At the Kilbirnie Stadium this afternoon tbo first match for the “Alf. Williams” trophy will be played between Marist, the winners of the senior championship, and Waterside, the team selected by the management committee of the Wellington Football Association to meet the champions. This competition, which is to be an annual one, was instituted at the last meeting of the management committee to commemorate Mr. Williams’s 21 years of office as secretary to the W.F.A.
