TO WICKETS AGAIN
Cricket Matches Start On October 15 MANAGEMENT DETAILS Championship cricket competitions in Wellington will commence on October 15, and practice wickets will be available on the Wednesday before that date. This decision was arrived at at the first meeting of the newly-elected management committee of the Wellington Cricket Association last night. Mr. A. E. Wilson was re-elected as assistant hon. secretary. The Petone Club wrote asking that the services of C. S. Dempster, the professional coach, should be allocated to the Petone eleven this season. The club pointed out that Dempster’s presence in the Petone team would do a lot of good to players in the Hutt Valley. The request was referred to the senior championship committee, which decides which team the coach shall play for. . Selectors Reappointed. Last year’s selectors —Messrs. A. W. Aldersley, K. C. James, and L. T. Cobcroft—were re-elected. Mr. A. M. Hollings favoured a sole selector, as to his mind three selectors worked for the interests of their own clubs. Mr. W. P. Walker moved that Mr. Aldersley be appointed sole selector, the motion being seconded by Mr. Hollings. An amendment by Mr. R. F. Steelo that Messrs. Aldersley and Oobcroft be appointed lapsed for want of a seconder. The chairman, Mr. P. B. Broad, said that he agreed with Mr. M. A. Noble’s view that three selectors were preferable to one. A solo selector had to be an exceptional man, and they were asking Mr. Aldersley to take on a very ’ invidious job. With three selectors, each acted as a brake on the others. Three selectors had done good work last season, and he personally felt that the association would bo making a serious mistake in going past the three selectors who had acted last year. Mr. A. E, Wilson moved that Messrs. A. W. Aldersley, K. C. James, and L. T. Cobcroft be re-elected as a selection committee. The amendment was seconded by Mr. A. IV. Duncan, and carried. Colts for Practice. The Institute Old Boys Club wrote stating that it had been reported to the committee of the club that two players from the club who were not nominated had been asked to attend practice at the colts’ net at the Basin Reserve last season, while five who were nominated were given one trial, and not asked to attend again. The club would like to know whether it was the intention of the association to go past clubs’ nominations in the future when selecting colts for practice. \ The chairman said that the clubs were asked to nominate players, but the final selection must rest with the association, which was to say. the coach. riunkct Shield Dates. ‘ It was decided to write to the associations concerned suggesting the following dates for Plunket Shield, matches this season:— Otago v. Wellington, at Wellington, December 24, 26, 27 and 28. Canterbury v. Wellington, at Christchurch, January .1, 2,4, 5. Wellington v. Auckland, at Auckland, January 20, 21, 23, 21. An invitation will be extended to Auckland to play a match at Wellington on Friday, Saturday, and Monday, January 7,8, and 10, on their way back from the southern tour. Match at’Nelson. The Nelson association suggested that Wellington should send a team to play a match at Nelson on October 24 and 25. It was decided to send the team on. condition that the Wellington association would not be responsible for any expense. The Nelson association suggested that a fairly strong team should be sent, including such players as Dempster, James, Lambert, Allcott, Dustin, McGirr, and Hope. It was reported that C. S. Dempster was taking a Wellington team to play a match at Napier on October 7 and 8, and that Hawke’s Bay would play a match at Wellington on November 30 and December 1. The following committees were set up for the season :— . Senior championship: Messrs. A. W. Duncan (chairman), A. M. Hollings, and W. J. R. Christophersen. Coaching and material: Messrs. Wilson (chairman), A. M. Hollings, and E. C. Wiren. Junior grades: Messrs. L. J. Brabin (chairman). Gray, aud Coucbman. Honorary members: Messrs. A. Varney (chairman). Walker, and P. B. Broad. Representative on Umpires’ Association : Mr. A. Ronaldson. Messrs. A. T. Donnelly and A. T. Bryne were reappointed as delegates to the New Zealand Cricket Association. Appreciation of the services which bad been rendered to cricket by Messrs. J. S. Hanna and R. A. Whyte were voiced by several speakers, and suitable resolutions were passed. Australians’ Visit. On the motion of Mr. E. C. Wiren. seconded by Mr. W. A. Aldersley, it was decided to donate the whole of the net takings, between £5O and £6O, from the exhibition match played by the Australian team at the Basin Reserve last Tuesday, to the Mayor of Wellington’s relief fund.
