Question of Censorship “If we attempt to gag the New Zealand Press we shall have a big job,” said Councillor A. Walker at the Eastbourne Borough Council last evening, when discussing a letter from the Nelson City Council asking for support in a proposal to suppress detrimental Press reports concerning riots, earthquakes, etc., in New Zealand. “The Nelson council may have a grievance, but for one grievance we have a thousand good reports,” he continued. “The council probably refers to reports outside the Dominion. The establishment of a censor would have a detrimental effect” “It is a great pity that untrue reports are sent all over the world,” remarked Councillor J. F. Rockstrow. He was in sympathy with the proposal, but he could not see that they could take any action. Councillor C. A. Rendle thought that if the High Commissioner at Home had seen detrimental reports he would have referred them to the Prime Minister. Councillor M. Magill agreed that the establishment of a censor would have a bad effect abroad. The letter was received and no action was taken.
