THE RACING WORLD

Beaten in Last Strides. The three-year-old Fordell-trained Far- . mer went out a firm favourite for the . hack once round. He led all the way, I but just got topped off in the last few strides by Kotaki Eka. Near Farmer throughout the running were Arikitea, Kotaki Eka, Tigerism, and Invictus. the field beinj; well strung out. Seamond and Thrasher improved their positions on the turn. Farmer and Arikitea led into the straight clear of Kotaki Eka and Thrasher. Arikitea weakened in the run home, but Kotaki Eka finished solidly and just got up to beat Farmer. Arikitea was a good third, with Tigerism fourth and Seamond right up. followed by Thrasher and Invictus. Kotaki Eka won well, but he is not likely to beat Farmer again. The latter looks like making good this season. Arikitea ran a good race, as also did Tigerism and Seamond. Thrasher was unlucky in the early running. Tangiroa fell at the five-furlong post; his rider, McLeod, escaped with a shaking. Improved Horse, The Barton winner All Humbug gave further evidence of his improvement by winning decisively in the Scaficld Handicap. Gaud Jury. Royal Bengal, Refresher, Fiji, and All Humbug jumped away best. Refresher and Fiji settled down in front from All Humbug. Royal Bengal, and Orby’s Choice. There was no change to the straight, where Fiji took charge. All Humbug immediately challenged and went to the front in a few strides Io win easily. Fiji holding off Orby’s Choice comfortably for second. Cluny was fourth, followed by Refresher, Korokio. and Chopin. All Humbug won brilliantly, and in his I present form will soon be heard of again. Fiji for a fresh horse ran well, showing a lot of speed. Orby’s Choice put up a creditable 'performance, and Cluny came well from the rear. Refresher, Korokio. and Chopin ran creditably, but Royal Bengal was very disappointing. Pace Very Fast. The locally owned and trained Ganpat had a fairly comfortable win in the hack sprint, but he was lucky to escape more serious opposition from the second and fourth horses. Aga Khan and Gay Court, both of whom were in trouble and well back in the early stages of the race. Bambury and Dick Whittington made the pace a cracker, and soon had the others strung out, Chief Marionette being in the rear, Gay Court and Aga Khan also well back. By the time they were round the turn Bambury and Dick Whittington were four lengths clear of Ganpat, Carfex. and Davistock. with Aga Khan becoming prominent. Bambury dropped back entering the straight, and once iu line Ganpat strode to the front for a comfortable win. Aga Khan continued his good run to cut Carfex out of second money, with Gay Court a handy fourth, . followed by Bambury. Dick Whittington, Chief Marionette, and Davistock. It was an exceptionally fast-run'race for hacks, and the two loaders cracked up at the end of five furlongs. Ganpat’s performance was a good One, but Aga Khan and Gay Court were undoubtedly very unlucky. Posy got on to the heels of another runner at the five furlongs, and was nearly down.

Outsider Just Fails. The outsider Statuary made all the running in the Marangai Handicap, and just failed to see it right out for a win, Teller beating him very narrowly in a fighting finish. Teller and Huanui were always handy to Statuary, Atholspcar leading the others, with Gibraltar toiling at the rear? Huanui dropped back a little at the halfmile. and Teller trailed Statuary into the straight. A strenuous battle saw Voitre get his mount home b.v only half a head. Atholspeac.was .two lengths-away third, with Gibraltar just fourth from Ruauui. Little Doubt was next. It was a very fast and true-run race, and Teller improved on his Mnrton showing, but he only just won, Voitre sharing most of the honours. Statuary put up a good performance to make such a solid pace and then hang on so well. He also improved on his Marton running, where he had finished last. A drop of a stone in the saddle-helped him. Atholspear ran

a solid race, and Gibraltar finished well from a long way back— in fact so far back • was he that his fourth placing at the a finish was very meritorious. Ruauui was , disappointing, and Little Doubt ran only r a fair race. Won Like a Good One, 1 View Halloo won the Flying Handicap . like a champion, coming away in the f straight to win decisively. 1 La Moderne was slowest to move from C a good start, Orapai, King Ford and Coui sent beginning besl. After a couple of i furlongs Consent was steadied, Royal > Hunting going -up fast to join Orapai and . King Ford. This trio ’cd round the turn ‘ from Consent, with Head Lady and View Halloo next. There was some crowding - for places coming into line, Consent suffering. Once in line View Halloo shot ■ away to win very decisively. La Moderne ■ came well from the back to cut Consent - out of second money. Orapai was a good I fourth, and then came Sir Pombal, Royal ■ Hunting, and Aston. View Halloo won well, and was superior on the day. Consent was unlucky in getting a bad run on the last bit, of the turn, and he should have been easily see- ' ond. At the same time La Moderne’s performance after her slow beginning was extra good. Orapai ran a sound race, having to be kept at it. all the way, as he drew the fence. Royal Hunting showed brilliant speed, hut did not run on. Details of the Racing MAIDEN RACE, of 05 sovs. .Six furlongs. Special weights. 4 SWIFT AND SURE, 7.12 ....(Atkins) 1 3 DAKAR, 7.12, car. KEEN CONTESTS

Fast Track at Wanganui FAVOURITES FAIL Teller Wins Chief Race SPRINT TO VIEW HALLOO (By Telegraph.—From “The Watcher.”) Wanganui, Sept. 22. The spring meeting of the Wanganui Jockey Club opened to-day in brilliant weather, the sun shining brightly all day. There was a fairly good attendance for an off day, and the racing provided plenty of interest, being held under perfect conditions, and on a very fast track. In fact the going was as fast as it is in the summer months. ’ Favourites did not have a good day, but there was a better turnover than on the corresponding day last year. This, combined with the increases recently shown at Marton, and at Dunedin and Ashburton in the South Island, may be taken as an augury for improved conditions financially for racing. Bast year the total for the day was £7499 for eight races: to-day there were seven, on which £6846/10/- was invested, i Two visitors to the meeting were the veteran horseman It. Dcrrett. of Iliccarton, and trainer W. Hobbs, also of that . centre. Prominent All the Way. The Hastings representative, Swift and Sure,..scored a nice win in the Maiden Race, after being promingut all the way. Cape Fair, Boon -tad Linoleum were slow away, the first-named being practically left. Hawora and Glowlight showed the best speed early, and led to the turn from Swift and Sure, then Illuminelli and Dakar. Dakar moved up to a handy position on the turn, where Hawora begun to drop back. Swift and Sure led into the straight with Glowliglit from Dakar. Dakar challenged, but Swift and Sure held on to win nicely. Taitoru and ••ape. Fair came from well back to run a fair third and fourth, then came Illuminelli, Royal Papa, and Glowlight. The winner is Australian-bred, being by the English horse Bold and Bad. He . showed plenty of speed as a two-year-old, ; and on this showing looks like being useful. Dakar had every chance except that he drew wide out, but he was well enough ' placed in the running to win had ho been good enough. The rest were well i beaten, especially Hawora, who was fan- 1 cled.. He was beaten three furlongs from 1 home. Glowlight showed speed but 1 did not finish on. Cape Fair’s perform- 1 a nee after a bad beginning was outstand- 1 ing. Runaway Win. High Commissioner scored a runaway win in the Highweight Handicap after the favourite, Henry of Navarre, had been carried off the course. Coining into ; line, however, it looked aS if High Com- ' missioner had the race in safe keeping i at the time. Bon Eve set’the pace from High Com- I missioner, from Warfille, Henry of Nav- < arre and Okopua. Henry of Navarre got 1 a good run up on the rails, and when ) High Commissioner took sole charge be- s fore reaching the straight Henry of j Navarre went up outside Bon Eve to a challenge.. Bon Eve then took him right v off the course, and Warfillo also suffered. 1 This left High Commissioner to win as he liked; while through the gap came s Okopua to get second. Henry of Navlirre i and Warfille were next and Bon Eve r fifth. .

High Commissioner won well and looked as i£ he would have scored in any case, but Henry of Navarre was unlucky. Okopua was fortunate.

CARTERTON CLUB Date of Annual Meeting Dominion Special Service. The Racing Conference has approved of the application of the Carterton Racing Club to bo allowed to hold their annual fixture <yi Saturday, November 19. The original date allotted for the meeting was Saturday, October 29, and a change of date was sought to avoid clashing with the trotting meeting at Petonc. The date applied for was decided upon after conferring with horse orj-nehs interested. . Sydney racegoers have not formed a high opinion of the capabilities of New Zealand riders, and, as few fully fledged Dominion jockeys have made the trip to Australia this spring, evidently the New Zealand trainers themselves ure realising that it is better to employ Sydney horsemen (says “Cardigan”). T. Green and H. Wiggins came across early, and G. Humphries is expected to ride. Silver Ring in the Epsom. The apprentices G. Duncan and C. Simpson have taken out permits, but Roy Reed and T. Webster have been in Sydney so long that they are no 'longer regarded as visitors. New Zealand riders have given some poor exhibitions in past years, but their lapses might have been largely due to the strangeness of the surroundings and inexperience of Australian conditions. MASTERTON MEETING

Electric Handicap for Hacks NOMINATIONS MONDAY The Electric Handicap, the final event on the programme for the Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting, is a race for hacks. The words “hack conditions” were omitted in error iu the published programme, and the secretary. Mr. N. H. James, has received the permission of the District Committee to make the necessary alteration. Nominations for the meeting close with the secretary on Monday next. NOTES AND COMMENTS The King’s Cup. The King's Cup will next be contested iu Victoria. It has been made an order of the day for the Birthday meeting in June next, and the Monday of the two days devoted to that particular fixture has been selected for its decision. 'The first. King's Cup was decided in Victoria in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of York. Since then it has been decided in each State of the Commonwealth in turn. Handicappers at Variance.

Rollo and Red Shadow afford just as blatant ’an example of handicappers at variance in the interpretation of the system. and the sizing up of form. Early last season, Red Shadow competed mostly in mile and a quarter events. He won three before he got. down to a 2.44 mark, and after this he won over two miles at Ashburton in a 4.32 class from 48yds. He could have been brought back 24yds.. but 12yds. was considered enough. This placed him on 4.27, or on 24yds. in the 4.29 class August Handicap. This he won. Again he could have been penalised 24yds., but got only 12, which landed him on 4.26. From this mark he won the King George Handicap, and was given the maximum penalty. 12 yds. This means that he won three twoinile races to incur a penalty of 3sec., when he could have been put back ssec. Rollo was on 36yds., 4.29, in the principal event on the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s winter meeting. It was a 4.32 class, and in finishing second he was penalised 12yds.. or the same as was Red Shadow for winning a similar class event at Ashburton. On the second day of the Forbury Park meeting Rollo, from 4.28. won the 4.32 class, and was knocked back to 4.26. He came on to the Canterbury Park meeting. and for winning a 4.29 class from a 4.26 mark, he was penalised 24yds. Since then his handicap has been considered by the handicapping committee, and he has been let up to 4.25. Even so, he has been penalised 4sec. for two wins and a second, while Red Shadow has been let off with a 3see. penalty for three wins and a second.
