LONG FILM CAREER
PRANCIS X. BUSHMAN, a genial American, who has been a film star for 22 years and has helped to make nearly 500 pictures, paid a visit to London last month, states an exchange. “When I first became known the names of screen actors were kept secret from the public,” ’he said. “Cinema managers were asked what our names were, and had to invent them. I went on the stage when I was nine. But I have earned a living as a wrestler, bicycle rider, artists’ model and sculptor.” Once the juvenile hero of the “fans,” Mr. Bushman’s most notable recent part was Messala in “Ben Hur”—an engagement which lasted four years. It was profitable, but the chariot race involved serious risk every day for weeks on end.
