The coastal steamer Holmdale came out of dock yesterday morning and berthed at No. 2 Queen’s Wharf. NOTICE TO MARINERS. The Marine Department advises that a shoal and foul ground have been reported near the Chatham Islands by Captain A. B. Anderson, master of the Tees. (1) Position: Cape Young 116 degrees S} miles. Lat. 43 degrees 38 minutes S.; long. 176 degrees 48 minutes W. (approx.). Details: A rocky shoal with a depth of about 4} fathoms over it and deep water all around is reported to lie in the above position. (2) Position: Near Durham Point Lat. 44 degrees 01 minutes S.; long. 176 degrees 41. minutes W. (approx.). Details: Foul ground with rocks awash is reported to extend for about 1} miles off shore between Kiringe bearing 075 degrees and the outer end of Jenny Reef. THE SYDNEY MARU. The Federal Company, local agents for the O.S.K. Line, have received advice that the motor-ship Sydney Marn, en route from Japan, will leave Raston (Tasmania) on October 1 for Wellington and Auckland. She is now due here on October 5 and will leave here again the following day for Auckland, thence to Sydney, Brisbane and Japan. -THE SCHOONER HUIA. The Nobel auxiliary schooner Huia is to leave Auckland for Melbourne next Monday with a cargo of pumice sand. After discharge the vessel will load explosives at Melbourne for Whyalla, South Australia. From Whyalla she will return to Melbourne to load explosives for Greymouth, Westport and Auckland. MANHATTAN’S GROSS TONNAGE. The new United States liner Manhattan is not after all a 30,000-tonner. The U.S. Bureau of Navigation, more prosaic than publicity departments, has officially measured the vessel and given her a gross tonnage of only 24.289.
