WAIROA REPAIRS

lieconstruction Under Way NEED FOR FINANCE Several Further Shocks NO DAMAGE REPORTED By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wairoa, Sept. 22. Several fairly heavy shocks were experienced last night. One at 7.45 was of a particularly long duration, and another about 2 o’clock being of ; a bumpy nature. No further damage is reported. The executive met last night in conference with local tradesmen. All work of replacing chimneys and tanks win be carried out In conjunction with the borough council. One tank and one chimney will be immediately restored to each house requiring them probably without cost tp the owner. The local residents are making every effort to assist themselves as far as finances allow, but the work is of such stupendous nature that it is impossible to carry out all repairs unless a large sum is forthcoming from outside sources. The Red Cross depot is now open, and is carrying out admirable work. The Unemployment Board is also rendering all assistance possible. A satisfactory temporary water supply should soon be in operation, filling a much-required necessity. The health officer reports that the general health of the community is good. The Wairoa branch of the Farmers Union met this afternoon, and votes of thanks were passed to the Dominion 1 executive of the Red Cross Society for offers of assistance. A committee was set up to go into ways and means of helping the stricken farmers by way of finance and materials. GISBORNE DAMAGE Many Chimneys Down CLEARING THE DEBRIS By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Sept. 22. As a result of the recent earthquake hundreds of chimneys are down in the Gisborne district. Many crashed on Friday morning, but many also did not fall but were, broken and cracked, .necessitating instant removal to avoid damage. Over 200 relief workers have been engaged during the past three days on rehabilitating works and private homes, . the majority removing cracked and leaning chimneys. Thig means a serious blow to the people on account of the expense, scores being absolutely unable to afford a replacement of chimneys. This morning Mr. Furkert, engineer-•in-chief of the Public Works'Department, inspected the town and portions of the district. Later in the day Mr. Furkert held a conference with Mr. Thornton, district engineer of the Public Works Department. Mr. Maude, deputy-mayor, and Mr. Dwyer, district public trustee. As a result of the meeting Mr. Furkert considered that Gisborne should be placed on the same fobting as Wairoa in regard to reinstatement of chimneys, and telegraphed the Prime Minister to that effect. This means that the Public Works Department will reinstate damage to the extent of replacement of one chimney and one tank lu the borough. However. where water reticulation is working, no tanks will be replaced. Appli cants must state their financial position and sign a form agreeing to accept the cost of such repairs free of interest. On the same form applicants agree to undertake the repayment of such loan of instalments, less any grants made from, the relief funds which will bo credited against the cost of the work carried out.

Even with this help, however, the position will be very hard in many eases, for in hundreds of instances two chimneys are ; down, while some have three or four. In addition, much structural damage was done to homes, a number of cases occurring where the chimneys crashed through the roofs in addition to the bouses being damaged by the upheaval At the conference with Mr. Furkert to-day the question of assistance in carrying out extensive repairs was not dealt with, but will be considered later.
