LABOUR CRITICISM
Economic Situation at Home TRADE UNION CONGRESS (Rec. September 6, 5.5 p.m.) Official wireless. Rugby, September 5. The sixty-fourth Trade Union Congress was opened at Newcastle to-day and will remain in session throughout the week. Mr. John Bromley, in bis presidential address, criticised the Government’s handling of the economic situation and declared that the right policy was not to curtail production, but to increase consumption. He denounced the policy of economy which lessened the purchasing power of the great body of consumers and urged that the problem could only be solved by drastic action on the basis of a shorter working day and working week without a reduction of wages. Employment must be equitably shared between the workless ffjd the overworked. The Congress agreed that a contribution of £lOOO to the unions engaged in the Lancashire cotton dispute be made.
