ESSAY COMPETITION

Interest in Astronomy PRIZES FOR SCHOOL PUPILS To encourage interest in astronomy, and particularly in the City Observatory, Kelburn, an essay competition for boys and girls of primary and secondary schools has been arranged to take place before the end of the school year. The subject of the essay is “A Visit to Kelburn Observatory,” and eight prizes, consisting of open orders for books, will be offered for the two best essays written by secondary school girls, secondary school boys, primary school girls and primary school boys. Competitors must pay a visit to the observatory, and their essays must be written after school hours under the supervision of a teacher. There is no time or length limit for the writing of the essays, and notes, but not books/ will be allowed. When written, the essays are to be marked on the outside of the envelope, “Observatory Essay,” and sent to the Honorary Director, Wellington City Observatory, Kelburn. The closing date is December 1, and every effort will be made to judge the essays before the schools close for the summer vacation.
