Ninth Round of B Grade NORTH ISLAND TITLES

The ninth round of B grade matches resulted in wins for Aotea, Hutt Ladles, Hutt Valley Ladies, Onslow, Petone Central, and P.W.M.C. Aotea is leading with' 16 championship points, Petone Central is next with 14 points, then Brooklyn, Hutt Ladies, and P.W.M.C. Ladies, each 12 points. Brooklyn was unfortunately one short in its match against Onslow. The standard of marksmanship this round was excellent, the second best performance this year. The 83 teamsmeu _akgregated 5458 points, an average of 65.76.' Hutt Ladies achieved the best team score, 469, and together with P.W.M.C. Ladies, the best combined team score, 935. Brooklyn Ladies, Hutt Valley Ladles, and Onslow improved on previous performances by 4 5. 3, and 1 point respectively. There were no possibles. There were seven 09’s, nine OS’s, and 22 67’s (this year’s record), glvr ing 38 who exceeded 66 points each, a record number for the. year; The sixtynines were scored by Mrs. Bird (H. The North Island Miniature Rifle Assoelation liolda its first championship meeting on Saturday, September 17, at the Wellington Association range. The committee is congratulated on its excellent programme, which shows tlia-t an earnest endeavour nas been made to place the meeting on a looting equal to a .303 one. The prize money is based on an entry of 75 competitors and entrance fee of only 25/- for three matches and the championship aggregate. Nearly all the money will be paid out in prizes, and one competitor in every 3.70 will participate. The teams’ match is attractive, and the shoulder-to-shoulder contest give.s it an added interest. Substantial prizes are provided in the optional aggregate, based on forty entries. The range will be open for practice from 7.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. The count-back system is being adopted for the purpose of eliminating the necessity of dividing the prizes. Provision has been made for competitors who are unable to attend the range before noon. Each match is ten shots, with an optional sigliter. The programme is as follows:—No. I—Wellington Match; No. 2— Canterbury Match; No. 3—Wairarapa Match. In each of these the prizes are £3 for first, with 19 others, totalling £l4. The championship aggregate is over these three matches,' first prize £5 and gold medal; 19 other prizes total £lB. , The entrance fee for the optional aggregate is 10/-. Scores from matches 2 and 3 will be taken; first prize £5, and 11 others totalling £l5. The teams’ match will consist of four men from each club. Entrance fee 15/- per team. Scores taken from matches 2 and 3; first prize £l2 and four cups, and three other prizes totalling £l4, based on 14 teams. Entries close on September 12. Tbe entry fee for individual matches' is 7/-. toner Hutt Ladies’ Club. The club has so far made very satisfactory progress, and some fine scores have been registered by both grades. The team which won the Ladies’ Shield has been very much on form this year. In the K Cup competition, Mrs. Cavaye, the club captain, made a very fine 99. Two Wellington ladies, Mrs. Congreve and Miss Thompson, also .scored 99 each, and in the shoot-off Mrs. Cavaye succeeded in annexing the cup, and is to be congratulated on her win. Mrs. Cavaye's standard of marksmanship is very high, and with splendid targets throughout the season she again becomes club cbampiom Mrs. Clarrie Bird, a first-year shot, has done exceptionally well, and bids fair to outrival more experienced shots. Miss Velma Bird, now in her second season, continues with good steady shooting to maintain her reputation of last year. These two young shots should be well up in the honours at the end of the season. An outstanding C grade shot is Mrs. McHolm, a new member,. who has been making targets of 68 and 69 with an ease which augurs well for her future as a markswoman. She is well in the lead for the C grade aggregate. The. winner of this aggregate receives the O. Ching Memorial Cup, a fine tirophy, donated as a challenge cup by Mrs. F. W. Ching in memory of her son. The cup is sure to be a great Incentive to young markswomen.

With ouly one shooting night a week during the season there has beeu little opportunity for promoting the social eteniugs which have always been a feature of the committee’s activities. It is hoped that several friendly matches can be arranged before the end of the season. Public Service Club. The time on Thursday evening was mainly occupied In shooting i°r the Witconibe and Caldwell Cup. However, the following competition shoots were recordedPoutawera 100, Craig 99, Nicholson 88. Competition shoots on Friday were:—Hendry two SlD’s, Slade 98 and 99, Poutawera 98, Bromley 98. . Friendly Match. . The Harbour Board Club recently entertained the Wellington Working Men's Club. The evening was a great success. Mr. R. H. Nicholl welcomed the visitors. Songs and instrumental items were contributed by Messrs. McKewie, Tilly, Tomlin, J. Woods, Berthold, Bent, Irwin, and McDonald. The result of the match was a win for W.W.M.C. The guessing competition was won by Mr. McEliigott. Mr. Pattison, responding on behalf of his club, expressed pleasure at being present; the evening had been very successful, and the musical items were excellent. "Aperture,” who was called upon to say a few words, also paid tribute to the excellence of the entertainment. Matches for Next Week. September 12.—Onslow v. Hutt Valley. ■September 13.—South v.
