HUTT VALLEY NEWS

Reference to the.loss received by the death of Mrs. S. Bennett was made at the monthly meeting of the Petone District Nurse Committee by the chairman, Mrs. Anderson. The late Mrs. Bennett was the committee’s representative on the Hospital Board, and was always a most interested and energetic worker. Mr. C. Rendle, of Eastbourne, who has been first assistant master at Kilbirnie School, has been transferred to Waiwetu School; where he will take up his duties on October 1. Mr. Rendle was formerly headmaster of the Eastbourne School. The appointment of a representative to the Wellington Hospital Board to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mrs. S. Bennett will be considered at the Petone Borough Council’s meeting to-night. DISTRESS RELIEF Work in the Hutt The relief of distress in the Hutt Valley remains a large problem, and beneficial work continues to be done by the relief committees. Figures for the amount of goods issued for the week ended August 20 by the Lower Hutt Relief Committee are: Meat, 37881 b; potatoes, 4 tons 7icwt.; bread. 4566 loaves; butter, 11851 b; milk, 1946 pints; swedes, 3781 b; and fish, 181 b. Activities of the Petone Relief Committee are as follow: —Meat, 32521 b; bread, 25041 b; milk, 1491 pints; coal, 2 tons 15jcwt.; fuel, 9 tons 14cwt.; coke, 14cwt. TENNIS CLUB’S MEETING Petone West Club Members A good attendance of members attended the annual meeting of the Petone West Tennis Clnb when Mr. A. G. Steffensen presided. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. The report showed a successful opening year’s sport, and the treasurer reported a small credit balance. The hone was expressed that members of the club would give hearty support in social activities, and would work to improve the club’s courts. In view of the season’s liabilities an increased subscription for both men and women was approved, and the membership is to be limited to prevent congestion. The opening day was fixed at September 24. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Patrons, Messrs. D. McKenzie and J. Kerr; president, Mr. A. G. Steffensen; vice-presidents, Messrs W. Nash. M.P., W. V. Dyer, J. Stonehouse, J. C. Burns, W. H. Smith. J. G. Tunnicliffe, H. A. Morris, W. H. Shadlow, J. Kyle, J. W. Longman, H. Jay, and ex officio, members of the Petone West School, and home and school executive; club captain, Mr. M. F. Nicholls; vice-club captain, Mr._J. Lockwood; secretary, Miss Ellen White; treasurer. Miss Nancy Greenwood; management committee, Misses F White and J. Nightingale, and Messrs. G. L. Nicholls, G H. Tunnicliffe, and A. M. Macfarlane.. At a subsequent meeting of the committee Mr. A. M. Macfarlane was re-elected chairman and Messrs. Tunnicliffe and Macfarlane were appointed delegates to the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Sub-Associa-tion.

Burglaries and similar crimes are on the increase in London. Last year there were 2300 more of these crimes than in 1930, and 3400 more than in 1929.

BOROUGH AFFAIRS Eastbourne Departments The following report on the workings of the Eastbourne Boroughdepartmenle was submitted by the Eastbourne town clerk, Mr. C. L. Bishop, at the last meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council .— Water and Drainage Works. “Steady progress is being made with the laying of the main between the-resen-oir and Eastbourne. The portion from the main road, Lowry Bay, to the reservoir should be completed within the next two weeks, while the main has always tala along the main road to Day s Bay. The two-inch pipe on one side of main road ui Eastbourne has been about three-quar-ters of the length. Borough Department. “The alterations to the tennis'courts are still under way, and should be completed during the present month completion of these works much will require to be done by way of repairs and maintenance to streets. Omnibus Department. “For the month of July, traffic receipts showed a falling-off of approximately £loo, making a total falling-off of £7OO for the four months to July 31. For the some period, trading expenditure has been reduced by £BOO, so despite the heavy tall in revenue, the position to date is more favourable than for the same period last year. Ferry Department. “The traffic receipts for this department fell by a approximately £5O for the month of July, making a total falling off of approximately £350 for the four months to July 31. The trading expenditure for the same period was reduced by approximately £7OO, leaving the net result approximately £350 better than for the same period last year. Taking together the bus and ferry departments, resulted are in the vicinity of being £5OO better than for the corresponding four months last year, and must be considered very satisfactory m view of a fall in revenue in the two departments of over £1000.” PORT NICHOLSON BAND An attractive concert was presented by the Port Nicholson Band at the Grand Opera House last evening. The programme was as follows“ Whistle and I’ll,” Miss Kathleen Chapple, of Christchurch; “Vienna,” Mr. Bernard Guadinger; "Break o’ Day,” Miss Blanche God.er; “Tatters,” Master Keith Lund; “Angus McDonald,” Miss Betty Hilliard, of Christchurch; “Youth.” Mr. J. M. Caldwell; ‘The Yukon Trail.” Miss Grade Kerr; xylophone solo, “La Matuchu,” Mr. Sid Bernard; cornet solo, “Facilita,” Mr. Tom Goodall. The accompanist was Mr. Frank E. Crowther.
