Extremely buoyant conditions prevailed on the Sydney Stock Exchange yesterday with advances in the values of many shares.
Good values were made at the annual horse sale at Levin on Wednesday, the top price being £47 for a five-year draught mare.
The view that there was at present more freedom of spending than hitherto, and that there existed to-day a greater measure of confidence than in the past, was expressed yesterday by several Wellington businessmen.
Parents of primary school children will save a total of about £40,000 by the Government’s extension for four years of the contract for the supply of school books, according to the Minister of Education.

“I think things are likely to improve soon,” said Mr. W. 11. P. Barber at the meeting of the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board yesterday, in discussing the employment of young people.
