OBITUARY
Mr. Samuel James Carman A member of an old and respected Wellington family—Mr. Samuel James Carman—died last week. Mr. Carman was the eldest son of the late Mr. P. J. Carman, at one time Government Inspector of Machinery. Mr. S. J. Carman, who was 62 years of age, followed his father in the engineering ' trade, serving his apprenticeship with the firm of S. Luke and Sons. After serving his time Mr. Carman joined the Union Steam Ship Company’s service in order to gain his marine engineer’s certificate, and remained in that service for 40 years. He was at different times chief engineer of the Kotuku, the Kalapoi, and the Koranui. He was a member of the Marine Engineers’ Institute, and also of the' Masonic Order (Manukau Lodge, Auckland). Mr. Carman died while at the Hutt visiting his aged mother. At the funeral at Taita the service was conducted by the Rev. 11. Sharp, and the picturesque Masonic service was conducted by Bro. W. J. Mcllvride, Worshipful Master of Lodge Waiwhetu.
