PROVINCIAL RUGBY Competition Games MAFJAWATU RESULTS Dominion Special Service" Palmerston North, August 13. The continuation of the Manawatu club championships this afternoon failed to produce any- surprises, although Feilding Old Boys, with a half-time lead of 13—0,'•almost defeated Kia Toa, the final score being 19 —18 in favour of the latter team; Old Boys had an easy win over United, while Massey College defaulted to Feilding. Weather conditions were ideal. There is now only another playing Saturday in the senior competition, in which Old Boys and Kia Toa are on even terms. In the junior division, Woodville defeated Bunnythorpe, and will meet St Patrick’s, who had a bye to-day, in the deciding match next Saturday. RESULTS AT A GLANCE. Senior. Old Boys 15, United 3. Kia' Toa 19, Feilding Old Boys 18.. Feilding won by default from Massey College. , Junior. Woodville 9, Bunnythorpe 7. High School 29, Batteries 3. Kia Toa 12, Old Boys 3 3. - Old Boys A 11. United 3. Feilding won by default from Massey College. Old Boys Defeat United. Undoubtedly, the better team on the day’s play, Old Boys should have won by a greater margin than 15 —3, which was the half-time and final score. Dominating the line-outs, and enjoying a large measure of success in the rucking, Old Boys’, forwards gave the backs innumerable opportunities that went begging. The rearguard of the winners was unable to handle accurately, and the frequency with which passes were dropped made the task of the United backs comparatively easy in the second half, during which Old Boys were rarely out of foreign territory. The game was disappointing. United was the first to score, H.-Ormond bustled Puklowski and McLeod, failing to hold a pass,. enabled Evans to score an easy try that was. not converted. Old Boys’ forwards retaliated, with a footrush that carried play 'to-United territory, where Weheipahana kicked a goal from the field. A few minutes later Irvine started a passing rush in which Wgheipahana and Kells handled, to Bradley, who completed the movement by scoring in the corner. The kick failed. A solo effort by Olliver, in which he stab punted over the full back’s head, and regained possession, brought about Old Boys’ next try, McLeod converting. Just on half-time McLeod kicked a penalty goal, making the half-time score 15 —3. Old • Boys attacked consistently, but without success, in the second half, the movements lacking finish. Mr. Wilson refereed. Kia. Toa Defeat Feilding 0.8. That the game is not lost till it is won was proved in the Kia Toa-Feilding Old Boys fixture, played on Johnston Park, when Kia Toa won by 19 points to 18, the winning try being scored by Griffin with only two minutes to go. The day was bright and sunny, and the grodnd rather hard. In the first spell Feilding Ohl Boys bad easily the better of the play. Early in the spell Dewe scored a splendid try after fooling the opposition; nnd N. Ama-, dio goaled. > ’ A- couple of minutes . later Bramwell scored under the posts tn an exactly similar way, and again N. Amadio goaled. The kicker landed a penalty goal before the spell ended, with Old Boys 13 ' points to nil. The second spell saw a reversal of the piny. Kia Toa gradually wore down the opposition, and in the end the fitter team won. .Mullins opened the score for his side with a penalty goal. Then Bramwell made a splendid opening, and passed to X. Amadio. who raced over and scored under the posts, the scorer scaling. From then onwards Kia Toa dominated the

play. McKenzie scored through M. Amadio failing to force down after he bad won to the ball. Then the Kia Toa forwards in a bunch got over for a good try, and Mullins'goaled. Mullins scored under the posts, as the result of a loose dribbling rush, and goaled, and with two minutes to go Griffin scored a splendid try—the winning one, which Mullins failed to convert. The game ended with Kia Toa the winners by the narrowest of margins—l 9 points to 18. Mr. Hancock had the whistle.

Fourth Grade. Martinborough 17, Carterton 6. High School defaulted to Greytown. . Sixth Grade. Carterton 52, Technical School 0. . An Exciting Game. Within two minutes of time, Gladstone scored the deciding try and succeeded in snatching victory from Old Boys, by a margin of bne point in' the match played on No. 2 ground, Memorial Park. The game was fast and exciting, although neither team was at full strength. Gladstone only fielded thirteen men, and Old Boys early in the game lost Cook, who was injured. Gladstone scored early ,in the game, Ferguson crossing. McKay failed to convert. Gladstone followed up fhis success with a second try, scored by. Booth. McKay, found the posts on this occasion. Roach evened up matters somewhat with two good penalties, making .the half-time score Gladstone 8, Old Boys 6. Old Boys took the lead on resumption, the ball going back to Roach, who was playing well up, and he dropped across after a short run. His kick failed. Old Boys’ position was further improved by a beautiful try by Clarke. He took a difficult pass in his stride and .went across with a strong run. Faulknor , failed to convert. Gladstone retaliated shortly afterward, Mason whipping across from the blind side of a scrummage. The kick failed. With only one point separating the two teams play became very determined. A delightful back movement in which all the rearguard handled saw 1 Welch score for Old Boys, again putting that team four points in the lead. Roach failed to convert. Gladstone were giving as much as they were taking, howeveer, and within two minutes of ' time swept away im a back movement that saw Henderson score. McKtfy converted, making the final score: Gladstone 16, Old Boys 15. Red Star Beat Featherston. The encounter between Red Star and Featherston, played at Featherston, provided spectators with a fast and interesting game. The match was won by the visiting team by 18 points to 14. Red Star had easily the better of matters in the first spell, and led by 18 points to 3 at half-time. In the second spell Featherston forwards improved considerably, and the team put on eleven points while Red Star were unable to improye the SC< Fo'r Red Star, Pye scored two tries, and Ewington and Howard scored. one each; F. Clark converted three. Hutana crossed the line on two; occasions for Featherston, and Elder and Stannard scored one try each. One try was converted by Austin. Hasterton Over-run. The Carterton v. Masterton match was a "fast arid 'operi” game, in as much as Cartertori were fast; and found Masterton open, with the result that the southern team had little difficulty in scoring 49 points. Carterton opened with a rush, and put on thirteen points in as ritany minutes, but Masterton steadied down and held them for the remainder of the spell, showing definite superiority in the loose. Bickering at this stage crossed for Masterton’s only try. Just on half-time Corlitt broke away and scored 'a try, which Fitzgerald converted, making the half-time score, Carterton 18, Masterton 3. In the second spell Carterton got completely out of control and rattled on 31 points. Masterton, who even when they were completely over-run, played vigorous apd determined football, were without the services of Lockwood and Whiteman for the greater part of the game. Tries for Carterton were scored by Fitzgerald (2), Trapp (3), Knowles (2), Corlitt. J. Walker, Burgess and Denby. Fitzgerald converted three, Knowles two, and Trapp. Denby and Churchhouse one each. - Greyfowii’s Easy Win. In a ragged and uninspiring game at the Carterton Showgrounds, Greytown scored a decisive win over Dalefield by 34 points to 5. The first spell, which ended 6—5 in Greytown’s favour was, as is indicated by the scores, very evenly contested. At half-time Stevens, the Dalefield full-back, left the field with an injured shoulder, and a quarter of an hour before the final whistle two other Dalefield backs, Boyd and Kingi, retired with injuries. This weakened the Dalefield team considerably, and the. Greytown rearguard, which was functioning far better than in the first spell, ran up 28 points. Dalefield was the heavier team, and its forwards played a good spoiling game-in-the first spell, and kept the opposing backs continually bustled, but in the second half they lost all their sting, and were almost powerless. Passing among the Dalefield backs was very erratic, and on no occasion did the ball travel along the whole line. For Greytown, Udy. W. Stringfellow and Molesworth scored two tries each, and C. Stringfellow and Hood scored one each. R. .Fuller converted five. Kingi scored Dalefield’s only try. which Parker converted. The referee was Mr. P. Reid. TAIHAPE. Taihape, August 13. GOOD GOAL-KICKING Interesting Rep. Game WANGANUI-WAIROA Dominion Special Service Wanganui. August 14. No brilliant play was seen in the match between Wanganui and Wairoa on Saturday, but the game was not dull, and concluded with the Wanganui representatives winners by 21 points to 11. Wanganui and Wairoa each had a fair share of the ball in the scrummages and lineouts, but although the Wanganui half was slower than his opponent in getting the ball away, the Wanganui backs made more of their opportunities. In loose forward play a number of Wanganui forwards were prominent, but Halliwell and Broughton were the only outstanding men in tbe Wairoa pack. Wairoa opened tbe scoring U'itliin a few minutes of the xick-off, when McLenahan goaled from a penalty. 1 his lead was not maintained for long, Wanganui pushing into Wairoa territory, where Rusden evened the scores by goaling from a penalty. Play went up and down-held for a few minutes, until the game settled in the Wairoa twenty-five. From this position Hutchison made the first try ot the match, pushing over between the posts in an easy position for Dennis to convert. Wairoa’s tackling was sound, and a number of Wanganui back movements were halted by good defensive play* At half-time Wanganui led by 8 points to 3. After tile spell there was scrummaging about midfield for some time, with Wairoa on the attack. Gradually they pushed up-field, and were in a good position when they were awarded a penalty, from which McLenahan goaled. Hutchinson scored the next try from the ruck in Wairoa territory, and Dennis goaled. Shortly after Burgeses scored after Bourke had cut through and passed to North.
