FLYING COMPETITION
Aero Club Annual Display “CRAZY” AIRMAN’S ANTICS Tn the presence of a large number of spectators, the Wellington Aero Club held its annual competitions at Rongotal Aerodrome on Saturday afternoon. A light northerly wind was blowing. The Lloyd Cup for the landing competition was won by Mr. M. K. Archibald, and Mr. C. C. Waite repeated last year’s success in the aerobatic competition, retaining the Stellin Cup. The trophies will be presented at the club’s annual ball. The feature of the afternoon was Flight-Lieutenant G. B. Bolt’s display of crazy flying. Taking off with the tip of one wing touching the ground, and careering around within the confines of the aerodrome, he thrilled even the most stolid spectators. He touched the ground first with a wing, then a wheel, and continuing the rolling motion with the other wheel and. wing. He charged fences, speeding up the engine at tile last moment to stagger over the obstacles, or flew at golf houses, and bitumen plants, as Don Quixote at a windmill. Finally, he landed with a wing tip on the ground—a pivot round which the wheel described an arc. Another 'spectacular Item was the towed gliding by Mr. L. F. P. Taylor, who piloted a glider, which was towed by a motor-car, round the- aerodrome until he reached a height of about 160 feet, when he dropped the tow rope and glided down, the wind whistling through the wires and funselage to a gentle landing. A formation flight by three moths completed the programme. Detailed results were:— ’ Landing competition: Mr. M. K. Archibald, 1; Mr. E. J. Lloyd and A. W. Brown, equal, 2. Aerobatic competition: Mr. C. C. Waite, 1.
