THE RACING WORLD

ANOTHER UPSET Pixie Gold at Riccarton FINAL DAY’S RACING Snowfall Killed by Fall A. E. ELLIS’S ARM BROKEN ,'(Bv Telegraph—From “The Watcher.”) Christchurch, August 13. The Canterbury 'Jockey Club’s Grand National meeting concluded at Riccarton to-day. in fine, bright 'weather, but a keen east> — ' breeze was cold and unpleasant. The ..ack was in first-class order, and considering the strong counter-attractions of the Rugby League Test and the Ran.furly. Shield match, there was an excellent attendance. Form proved fairly reliable, but, as they looked on paper, the- majority of events were tricky, and favourites scored only twice in the eight races. There was one outstanding surprise, the win of Pixie Gold in> the second-class race, the Redcliffs Handicap, being a complete upset. He carried only £4l on the machine, and his price exceeded'even that of Water Polo, who also ranked fifteenth favourite when he won on Thursday. Chapter of Accidents. The Lincoln Steeplechase saw a chapter of accidents, only four of the ten runners completing the. course. The only mishap was the death of Snowfall. He was brought down when’ Peterette fell in front of him at the sod-wall, about five furlongs * from the post, and he broke his baek, expiring ou tfie spot. Snowfall last year won the Grand National Steeplechase, but his form this winter and at the meeting just concluded was well below his best. A. E. Ellis, rider of Snowfall,, broke an arm, and V. Langford, rider of Peterette, received a cut on the head and concussion. Both were taken to hospital. , ' Ellis’s accident is particularly unfortunate. as; he hud Contracted to go to Sydney to do the ridlpg bn Peter Jackson and Gaine Carrington. It is a striking coincidence that almost twelve months ago to' the day he should have; met with similar bad luck. He had made arrangements to go to Sydney to ride Autbpay, but he was injured off Makeup in the Grand-National Hurdle race, and had to forfeit the' trip, and Autopay won the -Epsom Handicap. An additional piece of bad luck for Ellis > to-day was the fact that his accident prevented him from winning the concluding •vent on Lord Vai. Fighting Finishes. . Racing. throughout the day was keen and interesting and desperate, finishes Were staged in the two concluding events. Royal Visitor again proved himself a J dashing steeplechaser by scoring decisively in the Lincoln Steeplechase. Antrim Boy led ajl the way in the Sydenham Hurdles and won easily, but the wins of Rational II and Lord Vai in the two principal flat races were secured only by terrific struggles. .. , The tbtalisator turnover, for the day was £24,459/10/-, against £31,603/10/last year, a decrease Of £7144. The total for the meeting was £69,678/10/-, compared with £90,650 twelve months ago, a decrease for the three days of £20,971 10/-. Under present conditions, and considering the failure of favourites and the twb-horse event on Thursday,' for which, there was practically no money, it is a very satisfactory result. A particularly pleasing feature was the good 'attendance each day. 'Mr., McNab, did excellent work at. the Starting leVer and Mr. A. Dickson, in the judge's box, came through with, flying colours in some really desperate finishes. A Solid Gelding. Okopua, favourite for the Aylesbury .Steeplechase, was prominent for the first

two fences and then dropped back. He came again over the concluding stages, and, catching the leaders, Sir Richard and Diamond Jack, at the last fence, beat them home comfortably, Diamond Jack weakening to a moderate third. Gay Jim was a poor fourth, and Mareo Polo next. Okopua has raced very solidly lately and fully deserved his success. He has been the find of the winter amongst the jumpers. Apache, broke flown. Night Recital Improves. The hack sprint saw a sharp improvement in the lorm of Night Recital, who won narrowly from Hurlingham, lan's March and Palantua in a close finish. Palantua, Grampian, Hurlingham, Wealth, and lan’s March were prominent to the straight. ’ Palantua and Hurlingbam set to at the distance and just as Hurlingham disposed of her, Night Recital dashed up to snatch victory, with lan’s March only a neck away on the outer. Palantua was fourth right up, and then came Irish Chieftain, Kakara, Worship and Mataa. Night Recital won well, revealing his true form. Hurlingham is still a maiden, but should soon win. lan’s March ran well, and so did Palantua. " The latter, who was a warm favourite, had every chance. Mataa looked likely at the false rail, but the extra weight pulled her up. Worship and Grampian showed a lot of early speed. • ' Won All the Way. Antrim Boy, fourth favourite, led all the way in the Sydenham Hurdles, and scored very decisively. At various stages Full Mark, Nassock and Captain’s Gift took him on in running, but he was dear at the last fence from Full Mark, Nukumai, Captain’s Gift and Membo. Once over, Antrim Boy held on to his commanding advantage; while old Nukumai finished too stoutly' for Full Mark. Membo was a handy fourth, followed by Nassock, Captain’s Gift and Paddon. Antrim Boy gave none of his opponents a chance. The extra weight pulled up Captain’s Gift, and Paddon ran badly. Membo hung on -well, but never looked likely. . Nukumai and Full, Mark had a great battle for second, the veteran sticking best. Easy for Favourite. , Morena, a warm favourite for the hack hurdle race, won all the way. He gave a fine exhibition of jumping and in the finish scored very comfortably, Jayson outstaying Nine, of Spades for second money. Dainty Ways was fourth. Royal Mint tossed his rider, J. Kerr, at the first fence. Morena. ran a good race in the National and after Antrim Boy’s win in the Sydenhaifl Hurdles he looked the good thing he proved. He is a brilliant jumper, but needs firm going. Royal Visitor Again. Royal Visitor scored his second win of the meeting in the Lincoln Steeplechase. He was always prominent, and although his task was made easier by the elimination of Paris and Billy Boy, he scored so decisively as to dispel any doubts About his superiority. < • Taramoa made the running early from Royal Visitor and at the second sod wall Peterette fell, badly interfered with De-' portment, and brought down Snowfall. Calhanr ran off at the next fence and entering the straight the first time Royal Visitor led from Deportment, Paris, Billy Boy and Liicess. Paris tossed his rider off at Cutts’s fence and Billy Boy did, the' same at the second of the Kennels double. Royal Visitor then went away with a commanding lead and, jumping safely, scored very easily from Lucess, who only just got home from Deportment. Taramoa was the only other to finish. Royal Visitor was the most improved horse at the meeting, and he won as he liked. Deportment was unlucky, as he was badly interfered with early when Peterette fell, Lucess had every, chance. Both Paris and Billy ■ Boy were going well when they lost-thir riders, but they would have been troubled to cope with the winner. Rennie rode Billy' Boy, as Burgess could not do the weight without an unwarranted amount of. deadweight. Even with a 71b shot vest he tipped tho scale at only 9,10, and in endeavouring to make it up with lead the bag was so heavy he could hardly lift it. Win for Rational IT. Red Heckle and Merry Peel were separated by only 30/- for favouritism ip the Heathcote. Handicap. Both just missed the money, finishing fourth and fifth, but they had every chance except that possibly Merry Peel was up in front too soon. Retract from No. 1 began best, but soon lost his place, the pace to the straight being made by Gay Court from Consono, Don Jose and Merry Peel, then Rational 11, Semper Paratus, and Red Heckle, Compris in the rear. Gay Court, Consono and Merry Peel lead into the straight, with Semper Paratus, Rational II and Red Heckle handy. Rational H came on best and had the race won nearly a furlong from the post, but Compris came with a solid run and in a battling finish ran him to a head. Semper Paratus was a close third, with Red Heckle fourth, then Merry Peel, Don Jose, and Ramo. Rational II won- well, but Compris struck form and nearly succeeded. Semper Paratus ran well and consistently, as did Red Heckle) and Merry Peel. Ramo came well from a long way back and is worth watching for spring handicaps. Rank Outsider Wins. Pixie Gold provided the surprise of the week in the Redcliffs Handicap, .but he won without a fluke. Niggerhead tried to win all the way, but in a desperate finish Pixie Gold beat him from a handy position by a neck, with Elude, Woodful, Metal Bird and Night Flyer all in line for third money. Solitaire II was with Niggerhead throughout, actually leading round into line, but she then closed up. Normandy was never sighted, and Saltpot was always in the middle of the field. Elude will win soon with any luck. A Fino Win. Lord Vai got up in the last stride to win the concluding event in very solid fashion. Master Anomaly led to the straight from Adelphi, Taku Tania, Lord Vai, Fair Weather, Water Power and Ranelagh. Once heads were turned fbr home there was a tremendous struggle. Head and head the leaders raced in line, awl at tho post Lord Vai had nosed Fair Weather out of first, with Water Power, Mount Boa and Ranelagh in line across the track. Then came Tobacco Land, Coll and Royal Bengal. Lord Vai’s performance was high-class. AU the first half-dozen ran great races. Royal Bengal missed the jump-out from No. 2 and was in the ruck early. He finished well. He was the favourite from Ringing Cheer. The latter wag always well back.
