EWE MORTALITY

Losses in the Wairarapa EFFECT OF HEAVY SNOW / Dominion Special Service. Masterton, August 11. Continued cold weather is having a detrimental effect on stock, and the full effect of the severe snowstorm last week-end is now being felt—particularly as there is still snow on East Coast stations, and all farms in high country. One farmer has already lost fifty ewes since the beginning of this week, while another farmer at Rangitumau states his loss may reach up to one hundred. There was a light fall of snow on the Maungarakis this morning. The mortality among sheep is chiefly confined to ewes in lamb. Owing to the thick blanket of snow—in some cases still several feet in depth—the animals have been unable to get at the feed for the past few days, and the effect of this is telling, on those ewes close to lambing. . Warm rain is needed to prevent further mortality.
