GOVERNMENT’S “NO”
Reiterated for Second Time KARORI TRAM ROUTE The proposal for a shorter tramway route to Karori via Bowen and Sydney Streets again came before the City Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, had approached the Government by deputation with a request that it allow tramlines to be laid through Bowen and Sydney Streets. That request was declined. The Civic Commission in its report strongly recommended this route as the best, and on that recommendation the Government was again approached, and again the request was declined. Then a town-planning conference considered the various schemes and strongly recommended the same route. He had again approached the Prime Minister, but on August 1 he had received an answer stating that Cabinet had again considered the question and regretted that they could not accede to the request. No reason was given other than the suggestion of noise. There was no discussion on the matter.
