“AN UNFAIR RULING”

Emergency Tax Operation EFFECT ON APRIL INCOME * Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, August 11. “I think it is most' unfair and we should protest,” said Mr. A. Campbell at yesterday’s meeting of the Oroua County Council when a ruling from the Audit Department was received that the wage tax of a penny in every 1/8-was pavable on wages or salary received after May 1, 1932, although earned prior to that date. Mr. Campbell said that when the wages had been paid in May only threepence in the pound had been deducted. It would now be a difficult task to collect the balance of the tax. In his opinion the ruling was most unfair. The county clerk said some of the men affected had now left the district, and it would be impossible to collect the balance of tax owing. He agreed that the ruling was unfair. The council decided to make a protest to the Counties’ Association.
