MEMBO’S HURDLES i ■, •. . ■'?■- . :te: . ■ -' . , : , ' -■ Fine National Contest - C.J.C. SECOND DAY ;??</ ' ■ - :/;-■:?/■?, '■?•?■ V Great Effort by Retract BOIL-OVEK IN HACK MILE (By Telegraph—From “The Watcher. ) . Christchurch, August 11.-'- , , Favourites.. had a disastrous'.day at Riccarton 'to-day, -on the second day of ; the- Grand -National meeting, failing to ''win& single’’event,‘ while an- Outstanding surprise eventuated in: Water Polo’swin. ’ The principal event, the Grand • National .. Hurdles, was a fine contest. ’ The pace was on all the .way, and at the. finish 'superior stamina enabled Membo to win decisively from an outsider in Captain’s Gift, with the- favourite Paddon third. . ~ , A well-backed horse m Merry Peel won the August Handicap, having struck a patch of,really, good’.class. form. In the Islington Handicap Minerva! and Re- ’ tract, who. paid the .dividends, -were .both, well backed. 1 ’ t Falls in" the jumping., races were unattended "by any serious results. . . As an indication of the difficulties be-. getting backers, they were even cn the .’ wrong way in the two-horse rrace. This event crippled the totalisator ..turnover for-the day, the total of £18,658 representing a decrease of £6283/10/- on the second ’day last year. There was less . than £2OO on the two-horse event. . Some .rain fell during, the might,' and kept the going on the soft and' dead side, but it was in first-elass order.- Overhead - the conditions varied, being mostly dull ■ and cold. . .The judicial stewards- considered the running of Captain’s Gift in the Jumpers. Flat race on Tuesday. After hearing, the evidence of; D. P. Wilson, ownertrainer., and W.’ Cooper, the rider, the stewards decided that, they ’were not satisfied with the running of Captains Gift, but the evidence was insufficient, to. warrant action being taken. ? Okopua Out of Luck. '■■■ Okopua’, favourite for the Hunt Cup, lay well back in the early stages. He made his run over the last half, but when ini a handy position to the leaders at' the second last fence, he lost his rider. Postman then had charge. 1 hairing occupied a leading position in the gunning. Postman led over the last fence, and looked a winner until right on the post/ when both Calham and Petcrette headed him off in a close finish. Diamond Jack - was fourth, and Gay Jim next. Sir Richard fell three ’ fences frdm home. ■postman had every chance but-weak-ened badly over the last bit. Peterette again finished strongly and Calham. improved.’ Okopua was going well when

he los.t -his rider, .His luck is. out. Gaj’; Jim will improve ,with the race. . Normandy Decisively. ' i Normandy improved to win the W.oolston Handicap in decisive -fashion. •Molten. Execution/ Niggerhead, AVood-ful-hnd Tan’s March were prominent, to the .straight, with'Normandy in rebind. N’iggerhead bad charge at the distance, but Normandy came through on. the rdijs, followed .by. Mataa and 'Woodful on the outer. Normandy drew, out for a clear-cut win, a close finish for second seeing. Mataa getting there from Wood: ful und Niggerbead/’./.Then came Kakaru, Execution,’ Molten, . Hunting Gatland - Solitaire 11. Normandy- scored vary decisively, having. the race in keeping nearly a furlong from’home. Mataa,. .Niggerhead aild/Woodful all ran well. Molten failed to run on, and so did lan’s March, but Kakara came from well back, Execution was only fair. . The Winner gave Mr. O. S, ’Watkins. Racing Conference president, his first success since he won at Te Aroha last March. . .’.’.. . Easy Steeple Win. RoyaJ .Visitor scored an easy win in the Beaufort Steeplechase. Freuch Fleet and Taramoa took him on in the running arid French Fleet lasted, longest, actually jumping the second last fence with him anil making the better-jump.- . French -Fleet tirecl badly over the concluding stages, however, and Royal Visitor was not seriously Challenged.- Taramoa, who hud dropped -back at the middle stages, came again *at the finish. Hard Gold was a moderate third from the tiying French Fleet, then, came Snowfall and Bon Aryan. Nylotis lost his rider at the Kennels, -Double • second fence, and Lucess fell at . the top brush the.first.time, while Matu came' down a mile’from home. Lucess was -favourite, and his early elimination was a blow to backers. He would have been troubled to’beat Royal Visitor, who is very fit and greatly improved. French Fleet jumps well but does, not stay; Hard Gold’ran an improved'race without ever holding a win-ning-chance. Two-horse/Race. . - ’.The two-horee race for the Spreydon Hurdles resulted, as not infrequently happens, in the defeat of the favourite. Dainty Ways was made to carry her weight all the way, and after risking the second last fence she had no chance after that with Nine of Spades. The rider of the. winner adopted the right tactics, but. Dainty Ways ran.’ a very game and creditable race. Betting on -this, race’-was- almost negligible. Grand National Hurdles, Paddon, favourite for tho Grand Na-, tional Hurdles, was never, a. possibility, though he finished third. Membo improved to score a clear-cut victory. The lightweights Antrim Boy and: Morena, with Captain’s Gift, set a hot pace for a mile, Pahu, .Mem-bp and. Paddon occupying good positions and Jayson tailing right 'off.. / FuU Mark fell at the second. fence. Past the stand the first time Antrim Boy led from Morena and Captain's Gift, then came Pahu, Memb-o. High Titch and Nassock. Nukumai, who was second last, begun to improve his position as .they left the straight.: High Pitch hit the hurdle near. Cutts’s very hard. Morena took charge at the back

from Antrim Boy, Captain’s Gift, Pahu, i Mcfiibo and Paddon. ■V At the hurdle about six furlongs from home Paddou made a bad jump and lost ground.. Captain’s Gift took tne lead nt the home turn from Morena, with Pahu. Antrim Boy, Membo, laddon and Nukumai mxt. At the last hurdle Captain’s Gift and Membo led from Pahu, who fell. Antrim Boy ami Paddon. Nukumai also came down. yieinbo finished too strongly on the flat for Captain’s Gift, and won by two lengths, with Paddon three lengths away third. Antrim Boy was fourth, and, then came Nassock, Morena, Jayson, High Pitch, and Luminary. Membo jumped .well, and had too much staying power 'for Captain's Gift, who nevertheless showed strikingly improved form. Paddon did not jump well, and was never likely,' and his third placing looked fortunate, ‘for Pahu would without doubt have been certainly second and possibly the winner' had he not got in too close to .the last fence. He was coming very strongly, and his party were unlucky. Antrim Bov and Morena ran great races, but the others-were well beaten. Nuktimai had no chance when he fell at the last fence. The old fellow has had his day. Tltrllling Duel. ; The August Handicap resolved itself into a,thrilling duel between the two sons of Hunting Song, Merry Peel and Ringing Cheer. Takutaina, Waiwene, Beacon Fire, Lord Vai, and Fair Weather showed up to the course proper, where Lord A al had gone back. Takutaina and Beacon Fire were in 1 charge at the distance, but here: Merry Peel and Ringing Cheer put in anappearance on the outer. Head and head they raced over the last furlong, drawing away front their opponents. Merry Peel lasted best to win by a neck. Rational II was two or three lengths baek third clear of the-bunch, which was headed by Fair Weather, Lord Vai, Takutama. and Ranelagb. Merry Peel was just, too solid for Ringing Cheer in the" hard-fought finish, but the latter started the-meeting short of work. It was his best form. They had their opponents well, beaten, but Ba--tional 11, Beacon Fire, Fair Weather, Lord Vai, and Taku Tama' all ran good races. ■ -/ Diridend a Thumper. ..A- tremendous surprise .eventuated in the hack mile, the rank outsider, WaterPolo, carrying only £3B, getting up in the. last stride to head off the consistent' Krioeklong. Kriocklong was always .prominent, and after taking the lead at the distance was all over a winner until Water Polo swooped down oil her. Weatherly, always well placed,, was a close third, and then came a 'big bunch, ’headed by Elude, Irish Chieftain, Gay Court, Pixie Gold, and Kiri. The winner is a half-brother by Pombil to Agrion, being: bred by Mr. G. M. Currie. Hri carries the well-known colours of Nightmarch’s owner. His performance was .good, for he was right away in the rear in the .early"stages of the race. Tie ’paid a sensational dividend. The Trentham-trained Gay Court was a firm favourite. He was handy throughout, and had every chance. Tranquillity: ran- well, disputing the lead with Knocklong to the straight, where he retired. Retract Just Fails. Retract put up a first-class performance in the Islington Handicap. | As usual ho dropped to the rear in the running, but with the race half over he was so far back that his task looked impossible. Voitre,

however, timed his run nicely, and just failed to head off Minervyl. .' Saltpot and Giggleswick led to the straight, with Semper Paratus, Moun-; Boa, Ravine, Craigavon ami Minerval Mi well placed. Saltpot had dropped out entering the straight. Minerval joining, Giggleswick. Minerval hud solo charge at the false rail, but. first Compris and; then Retract put up challenges. . Retract ran on well, but Minerval held him off oy a head. Semper Paratus was a poor third, with C’ompris fourth, followed by Kamo, Fast Passage, Ravine, and Colonel cy< Mincrval won well, but Retract’s performance was the- feature of the race. They beat all others very decisively. Fast Passage wa.> in the middle of tut field throughout, and was never ‘'kelv. Compris is improving. He I , o< .' l 'S. d dangerous at the false rail, and just faii.d over the last furlong.
