YESTERDAY’S WEATHER
Cheerless Day in Wellington Cold, bleak weather conditions were experienced in Wellington yesterday. The day was overcast and a strong, raw wind blew continuously from the south. Snow was at an unusually low level on the Tararuas and other nearby ranges. Boisterous south-west weather continued at Auckland, but the day was fine and conditions were continually improving. The barometer was rising, and registered last evening 29.90 in. Wintry weather prevailed at Christchurch. Snow commenced to fall at about midnight, and the ground was covered to a depth of two inches or more by daylight. Snow, sleet, and rain fell at intervals during the day, and conditions last evening were no better. A fresh breeze 'blew from the south-west. The maximum temperature was 39 degrees. The barometer registered 29.90 at 5 p.m„ and was rising. Following a wintry night, the weather was again extremely cold at Dunedin and there were frequent falls of snow and sleet. The snowfall in the city was not heavy, but all the surrounding hills were covered in a mantle of white. There was a strong wind blowing from the south-west. The maximum temperature was 40 degrees, with the barometer fairly high and steady, the reading last evening being aO.OOin.
