Spedding Ltd. have received cabled advice that the Swedish motor-ship Tisnaren, en route from Cape Town, left Melbourne on Thursday morning for Wellington. Captain W. W. Fish has taken command of the Poolta, relieving Captain W. Whitefield for holidays. Captain W. A. Gray has been appointed master of the Waipiata, relieving Captain G. B. Hoddinott for fiirther orders. Mr. E. A. Stein, chief officer of the Loongana, is joining, the Oonah in a similar capacity, relieving Mr. E. A. Buckingham for holidays. Mr. J. Warcup, who has been bn holidays at Lyttelton, has joined the Poolta as chief engineer, relieving Mr. J. A. Pearson for holidays. Captain J. F. Crawford was appointed to the position of -.harbourmaster at Wednesday’s meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board (states the “Christchurch Times”). He joined the Harbour Board’s staff as second pilot in 1911, and was promoted to the position of first pilot in 1922 on the promotion of Captain T. M. Hunter to harbourmaster. Captain Crawford was born at Christchurch, and after leaving school went to sea to serve his four years’ apprenticeship in the New Zealand Shipping Company s ship Waimate. On completing his apprenticeship under Captain F. Canese and Captain Worster he was promoted to the position of third mate, and remained in the ship for a further eighteen months. He then transferred to steam, joining the Union Company as fourth mate of the Mararoa, at that time engaged in the intercolonial service. His next vessel was the Oonah, then running between Tasmania and Sydney. Several transfers followed to various vessels of the company’s fleet. Later he was promoted to second mate of the old Kini. When next he was promoted he was appointed chief mate of the Kotuku, and he served in a similar capacity in a number of other ships. About twentyfive years ago he was appointed to take temporary command of the Whangape. and after that he was master of the Kotuku. Rosamond.
