Relief of Mortgagors
Sir, —I notice in this morning's "D> minion” a statement by Mr. Justice Ostler at Palmerston that mortgagees were reasonable. It is quite obvious if they were reasonable the judge would not come in contact with them. I have known three cases to go before the commission, and not get any relief. All the relief goes to the mortgagee. In one appeal against the vendor mortgagee the owner, who has let his farm, has to go without any interest for 12 months, and also dive into bis little reserve at the bank, and all the mortgagee has to remit is 20 per cent, of interest for six months. That means, of course, he gets 5 per cent, instead of 6 per cent., and that is nearly eaten up t'n costs, for the appeal. The mortgagee is a well-to-do man. I am sure the commission is not carrying out the wishes of Parliament in giving the mortgagees the benefit every time. I wouljl like to know how other# are getting on. —I am., etc., DISAPPOINTED. August 3.
