An Unexpected Explosion RELIEF WORKERS INJURED ‘ X By Telegraph—-Press Association. Auckland, August 3. Several relief workers were Injured, one fairly seriously, by a shower of rocks and debris which, as a result of a too-powerful blasting charge, was thrown for over 100 yards to where a band of men were just leaving for home at the conclusion, of the day’s work at Western Springs,'where levelling operations are being conducted. Over a dozen men, some on foot and some cycling, were proceeding along Great North Road, a considerable -dis-
tance from where blasting operations had been previously conducted during the day. Suddenly there was a terrific explosion, and the men saw that the charge had been fired about 100 yards or more away. Suddenly the men found themselves surrounded by a hail of falling rocks. Richard Lanigan, aged 28, of Point Chevalier Road, who was -riding a bicycle, was struck by a boulder measuring nearly a foot across, which crashed down on to the front of his machine almost across the handlebars. Both his hands were severely injured, the thumb of his left hand being broken. The front wheel of the bicycle was completely smashed. Several other workers were hit by smaller stones, receiving minor cuts, while one man received painful injuries to the chest
