FORESTRY COMPETITIONS

Successful School Children Although the number of entries for the Forestry League’s annual schools competition was much larger than last year, the general standard of exhibits did not compare favourably with that of last year. The judges reported that the winning exhibits showed a good selection of specimens, including a fairly good proportion of flowers or fruits in addition to the foliage. . The naming of specimens in both classes is good generally, the common names being apparently familiar to most of the competitors. In the best entries exceptionally few errors were exhibited in the botanical nomenclature of the less common species. Much variation was shown in the methods of mounting and setting out the specimens, and though some exhibits showed clever manipulation and neatness, this aspect of the competition was on the whole the least satisfactory. The youngest competitor, aged Ti, won the second prize in the junior class. The prize-list was:— , Senior class (12-16 years) : Dulcie Bartell. Turangarere. 1; Phyllis Beasley, Owhiwa, Parua Bay, 2. Highly commended: David Watts, Hawera; Joyce Trevethick, Wanganui: Ruth Efitch, Wellington; Linda Kimbell, Maungawhau; Bruce Deihl, Ngaturi. Junior class (under 12 years): Joyce Corkhill, Wellington. 1; Elwyn Welch, Masterton, 2. Highly commended: Mary McMorran, Wellington; E. Chadwick, Turangarere; Norma Wilde, Okarita, Westland.
