FATAL EXPLOSION
Five Men Killed and Many Injured DISASTER IN HOTEL (By Telegraph.—Preu Awn.—Copyright.) New York, August 1. An explosion shook the 41-story Ritz Towers Hotel, Park Avenue, to-day, killing or seriously injuring a number of men, blowing out the fronts of stores, and scattering a fortune of jewels in the street The explosion, which occurred in the sub-basement, killed five firemen, injured one (who is expected to die), and injured less seriously twenty-five persons, including two women and two children. The disaster occurred while the firemen were fighting a blaze in the hotel paint shop. The explosion brought down the ceilings of the lower floors of the hotel, and blew out the fronts of the shops which lined the street level. Thousands of dollars’ worth of precious stones in a jewellery store were blown into the street, and debris filled a block of 57th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
The fire was got under control.
