Mr. Polson’s Address to Farmers
Sir, —Having read a letter which appeared in your columns' last week signed by a correspondent called “Plato,” in which Mr. W. J. Polson is accused of quoting, according to “Plato,” without “references or apologies,” from Mr. R. McKenna’s annual address to the shareholders of the Midland Bank, and having just completed reading Mr. presidential address to the Farmers’ Union annual conference on July 7. 1932. I must say that the correspondent “Plato” appears to have deliberately misstated the facts of the remarks made by Mr. Polson, which were as follows:—“I think that the opinion of a reputed authority on currency will not be out of place here. At a meeting of shareholders of the Midland Bank on January 29, the Rt. Hon. R. McKenna stated, inter alia,” and then follows the quotations referred to. set out clearly in inverted commas. It will therefore be seen that the allegation made by “Plato” is most unfair and misleading.—I am. G. A. CARTER. Stratford. July 30. [The comment 'of the correspondent “Plato” was based on a Press Association report of Mr. Polson’s address. Colonel J. Pow, Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, has explained that nearly a page of Mr. Poison’s speech was devoted to an extract from a speech by Mr. McKenna, and acknowledged to be the work of Mr. McKenna. Unfortunately, Colonel Pow states, through careless proofing, . one small paragraph, making the position clear, was not included within the quote* tion.]
