UNSETTLED CHINA
“Chaos Only Temporary” The Chaotic conditions now existing in China cannot continue for long,” said Dr. .E. J. Stuckey, one of the Australian representatives to the recent conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations, and a recognised authority on Chinese affairs, on his return to Sydney recently. Dr. Stuckey said that although at present banditry was rife in China, and trade had suffered severely, it was only a question of time before there would be a strong government which would be able to develop the country’s vast resources. The Chinese people were among the most intelligent in the world, and were capable of adapting themselves to almost any conditions. They were certainly too intelligent to let the present state of affairs continue. It should be remembered that the system of government which had existed for thousands of years had been recently swept away, and that the people as a whole, having discarded their old loyalties, had not yet found others to replace them. However, among certain sections, the late Dr. Sun Yat Sen had almost been deified, and his theories were being widely taught. The most significant recent factor in Eastern affairs, said Dr. Stuckey, was the creation of the new State of Manchuria, which had for its nominal head a descendant of the ancient Chinese ruling dynasty, but which was really controlled by his Japanese advisers.
