Road Economy

Sir, —The introduction of the report of the committee of civil engineers, which is to be discussed by the conference in Wellington, reads as follows:—“Except for the purpose of some development, scheme, no road improvement work is justified unless such work is economically sound.” My object in writing to you is to ask “the powers that be” is there any justification for spending hundreds of pounds in widening the Wainui Hill road, seeing that a tunnel is now being pierced through the hill, which will, obviously, take all the traffic to the Wainui valley, when completed, in, say, two years’ time? I maintain that the widening of this precipitous road, which will be practically unused in a comparatively short time, is not an economically sound proposition, and that the money being spent on it could be diverted to work that would be of a far more useful nature.— I am, etc., „ “CIVIC."
