EXPORTS INCREASE
Trade of Wellington COMPARISON WITH 1931 Shipping and cargo statistics for Wellington for the month of May, 1932, when compared with the corresponding month of last year, show a decrease in the net tonnage of shipping arrivals by 39,686 net tons, according to a statement made at last evening’s meeting by the chairman of the Wellington 1 Harbour Board, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood. There was a decrease also of 38,483 tons in the total tonnage handled, and this was due principally to coal importations, which decreased. by 23,792 tons. General cargo imports from British and foreign ports decreased by 3856 tons, and from coastal ports by 4545 tons. Exports, on the other hand, to British and foreign ports, increased slightly, which was due mainly to frozen meat, which increased by 1098 tons, and cheese, which increased by 513 tons.
Mr. Norwood said that he did not propose to comment on the figures, beyond saying that they were a little better than had been anticipated.
