ROAD CYCLING RACE

To-morrow’s Open Event GOOD CONTEST EXPECTED Given tine weather, the. 25rmile open road cycling event to be held to-morrow by tlie Poneke Amateur Cycling Club should- be the best of the season to date. Conditions were unfavourable on a recent Saturday when the first open event of the season was. held by the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club, and out. of a large entrv only about half the competitors faced the starter. If the weather is good, there is every reason to expect that to-morrow’s race will be a complete success. Ou the scratch mark will be R. Ulmer, who was nominated for the Olympic Gaines, P. N. Robinson. A. Pennington, O. Ericsson, arid L. Roberts —as fine a group of scratch men as could be gathered together among Wellington cyclists at the present time. The scratch riders are expected to make fastest time, but they will meet with some strong rivalry from the 2min. riders, who include some excellent performers. The club is anxious to enlist the practical support of those who are interested in road cycling and who may be willing to act as road stewards for the race. The event will begin at 2.30 p.m. sharp, and competitors are specially requested to be ready on the mark at that time in order that the event can start promptly and so be gun during a period, when the road will not be thronged with Trentham race traffic. The course will run from the Petone Rowing Club’s shed along the Esplanade, down Cuba Street, across, the Hutt bridge, and then by the main road to a point near Quinns’ Post, where stewards will turn the riders for the home run. When the Hutt bridge is crossed on the return journey, the route will be to the Lower Hutt railway station, and then by the main south road to Petone, turning down the lane near Odlin’s and finishing along the Esplanade.
