THE RACING WORLD

RETRACT’S IRRESISTIBLE FINISH

Meritorious Win in Parliamentary Handicap

SECOND DAY OF TRENTHAM RACES

Consistent Sprinters: Some First-class Contests

(By “The Watcher.”) Proceedings at Trentham yesterday were very, quiet for the second day of the Wellington Racing Club’s winter meeting. The attendance was much smaller than on the first day and was reflected in the totalisator returns, which were the smallest experienced by the Wellington club for several years. Lack of capital on the part of backers did not affect the standard of the racing, which was again high class, and in cases providing extremely close finishes.' Retract put up an outstanding performance to win the principal event, the Parliamentary Handicap. At the January meeting here he showed good form, two wins and a second in three starts being his portion. In the autumn he was taken to Sydney by his then trainer, T. Pritchard. He won a race at a suburban meeting, but failed to act up to the promise that had warranted the trip. Since his return he has been off the scene and also sent back to his owners, and this meeting is his first appearance here since January. Remarkably consistent form was shown again by the sprinters Chief Link and Lord Vai, and at the finish of their race yesterday the judge was unable to separate them, The win of Foreign Queen in the Trial Plate was one of the features of the day. She fairly spread-eagled her opponents. Foreign Queen is by Mercian King, an Australian-bred horse who, after a season in Hawke’s Bay, unfortunately died.

The weather was cold but, except for one or two light showers, was fine. The track was again in first-class order, as the times of the various races indicate. Wagering was slack, and with an additional handicap of a four-horse race the total for the day was only f!6,0C8. This represents a decrease of £7282/10/- on the second day last year, which was a Wednesday. As a result of interference in the High-Weight Handicap R. C. Miles, rider of Fernden, was suspended for the remainder of the season for careless riding. Okopua’s Double. Okopua scored another convincing win in the hack steeplechase. He lay fairly well back throughout the running, but was up with the leaders, Royal Reign and Town Beauty, at the last fence, finishing too strongly for the outsider, Royal Reign, who had either been in the lead or near it throughout the journey. Royal Reign, Gaswyn, and High Heather took turns in the lead, Hard Gold, Valves, Town Beauty, and Okopua taking up positions behind them. On the last circuit Valves, Hard Gold, and Town Beauty all tested the leaders, but Hard Gold and Valves wer,e beaten half a mile from home. Royal Reign and Town Beauty turned for home together, but Okopua had caught them at the last fence. Royal Reign hung on well, but Okopua proved too solid for him. Town Beauty was a poor third, with Hard Gold fourth, followed by Valves, High Heather, and Kowhatu, Gaswyn falling at the last fence. Hard Gold was a good favourite. He ran a creditable race, but never held a winning chance, and the race in the Wellington Steeplechase appeared to have taken a lot out of him. Royal Reign improved and nearly brought off a big surprise, but Okopua was just too good. Town Beauty, ridden in behind this time, looked likely at the last fence, but again failed to stay. A Brilliant Filly. Foreign Queeu, nearly three times as well backed as the second favourite, Ida Merling, fully justified her support, winning very easily. Foreign Queen. Ida Merling, Shamfight, Araios, March Alone, Nassau Lady, and Irish Chieftain comprised the early leading bunch. By the time the course proper was reached . Foreign Queen, had drawn clear of Ida Merling. who in turn was clear of Shamfight, the rest of the field being strung out. At no stage was Foreign Queen in danger, and she won by a good margin, Ida Merling being just as comfortably 1 second from Shamfight. Takakua was fourth, and then came Irish Chieftain, Late Jest, Araios, Rene Belle, and Cardinal Moon. Foreign Queen outclassed her opponents. and it was her fourth win on end insimilar class. She is an exceptionally speedy filly. Ida Merling ran up to her form without having any chance with the winner, and Shamfight also ran creditably. The rest were well beaten. Kotaki Eka Surprises. Form ran true in the case of the almost equally-backed favourite, Gay Court and Night Recital in the hack seven, but one of the outsiders in Kotaki Eka came to and beat them both fairly comfortKotaki Eka dwelt at the start, and Jost some ground, but after Sanguine King had led the favourites out of the barrier Kotaki Eka made a fast run, and had charge at the five furlongs and across the top from Gay Court, Night Recital, Sanguine King, and Headland. Gay Court and Night Recital both made strenuous efforts to overhaul Kotaki Eka, but they never loked like getting to him, and he won well. Gay Court stuck just too well for Night Recital. Sanguine King was a poor fourth, followed by Headland and Revision. The winner’s performance was good, especially after his early loss of ground. He has a lot of speed, but appears to do better over more than sprint distances. Gay Court and Night Recital were the only ones ever likely to beat him, but they were not good enough. Baku Improves. Pahu showed considerable improvement by his race the first day to win again very easily in the hack hurdles from three opponents. Royal Visitor and Pahu made the pace from CJppton and Henry of Navarre. Royal visitor was beaten entering the straight, but Henrv of Navarre came at Pahu at the last fence. Pahu, however, drew away again for a decisive win. He should now be in line for more important events over hurdles. Good Class Performance. Retract put up a good class performance to win the Parliamentary Handicap. He drew No. 1, but did not begin well and Wiggins let him drop right back to last. He was still there with the journey more than half gone, but, .gradually working up over the last half, lie smothered the opposition in the straight. Vitaphone settled down to make the pace from Fast 'Passage, Admiral Drake, Imperial Fame. Compris, Little Doubt, and True Blood. The order was practically unaltered down the back stretch, the rear- being brought up by Retract. Before the stretch had been completed True Blood had run up prominently and across the home turn and past the half Vitaphone led from True Blood, Fast Passage, Imperial Fame, High Pitch, Little Doubt,. Admiral Drake, and Joie de Vai. At. the half Retract began to move up and on the last bit of the turn Mount Boa on the outer had become very prominent. Once in line Little Doubt and Fast Passage began to single themselves out, but Joie de Vai joined in and then Retract came with a solid ami wall-sustained run. He' had the race won thirty yards off the post and was going away as they crossed the line, FastPassage beating Joie de Vai and Little

•Doubt, who dead-heated for third just as comfortably. Then came Protomint, Courageous nnd Compris, and Admiral Drake headed the bunch. Retract’s performance was outstanding. Fast Passage ran another very _ solid race, -while Little Doubt and Joie de Vai also ran creditably. Protomint, a fresh horse and firm favourite, did not get away well, but his chance was as good as that of Retract had he been equal to it. Mount Boa faded out very quickly after his prominent showing at the end of a mile. Membo Stays Well. Fernden tried to win all the way in the Highweight, and was still there _in the straight, but Thrasher, on the rails, and Membo, on the outer, wore him down, Membo in turn proving too good a stayer for Thrasher. Fernden was a moderate third and Flower a poor fourth, followed by Air Laddie and Warzone. Membo stuck on too well for his opponents. Flower was nearly brought down passing the post the first time, and she drifted back to last. It no doubt affected her prospects. Air Laddie ran a very poor race. Form Substantiated. Form was well to the fore in the open seven furlongs, when Chief Link and Lord Vai, first and second on the first day, dead-heated, again clean of their opponents. Lord Argosy quickly hit the front, and settled down from Orby’s Choice, Chief Link, Rational 11, Eminent, and Lord Vai. The order across the home turn tvas Lord Argosv, Orby’s Choice, Juggle, Chief Link, Eminent, Lord Vai, and Rational 11. Once in the straight the lenders gave way to Chief Link, who was immediately challenged by Lord Vai. In a battling head-and-head finish they crossed the line on terms, two lengths out from Rational 11, Eminent, Teller, Taboo, Lord Argosy, Juggle, and Orby’s Choice. Chief Link and Lord Vai again asserted decisive superiority over their opponents. Chief Link was handily placed throughout, but Lord Vai did not jump away too well. Better placed in the running he would have won. The form of the winning pair was remarkably consistent Rational II ran a good race, and so did Eminent, Teller, Taboo, Lord Argosy, Juggle, and Orby’s Choice. Teller came from a long way back, and was right un at the finish. Master Anomaly was slow away, and never looked likely, nor did Water Power become prominent at any stage. A Great Galloper. Woodful, favourite for the concluding event, was handy throughout, but he was not good enough. The second choice, Belvoir, showed brilliant speed, and although Weatherstep, Solitaire 11, Woodful, Gold Sand, Lady Court, and Inter- ’ locator were handy to him early, he was out by himself coming on to the course proper. From that stage on he just galloped away and won with ease. Lord Buchan came through in the straight and took second comfortably from Gold Sand, with Merry Peel fourth, then Solitaire 11, Woodful, Interlocutor, and Traylavah. The winner is an exceptionally brilliant galloper, and it is a pity he is touched in the wind. It was rather remarkable that two horses both so afflicted should lead home the field, for Lord Buchan makes a noise. He improved, and was finishing solidly. Gold Sand and Merry Peel ran improved races, but the winner outclassed all his opponents.
