JUVENILE WELFARE

Co-ordination of Effort BOYS’ WEEK TO BE HELD A decision of considerable importance in connection with welfare work among the boys of Wellington is that recently arrived at by officially appointed representatives of the Y.M.C.A., Boys Institute, and Boy Scouts’ Association. A permanent joint committee has been appointed and will be known as the Associated Boys’ Organisations.” The purpose of the new combined organisation Is to explore, opportunities for co-operative service on behalf of boys, and wherever possible to exchange ideas and avoid the overlapping of effort. The first event to be organised is that of the Boys’ Week, which will be held during November next. The tentative programme will include, a field and demonstration day, hobbies and models exhibition, gymnastic displays, boxing, scoutcraft demonstrations, talks to boys and parents, church parades, etc. The object of these events will be to remind the community of its obligation to its own boys and to demonstrate what the boys of Wellington are capable of doing in their leisure hours under skilled leadership. It is the Intention of the combined committee also to work for the betterment of the most needy boys in the community. To this end the Wellingon Rugby Union has agreed to the recommendation of the principals of Wellington College and St. Patrick’s College that the proceeds of the intercollegiate Rugby match to be held on Wednesday next should be devoted to the work for needy and unemployed juveniles. It is hoped that the publie will give generous support by their attendance.
