New Zealanders Beaten WIMBLEDON TOURNEY Results of Women’s Matches By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, June 22. E. D. Andrews and C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand) were beaten in the first round of the doubles at the Wimbledon lawn tennis championship tournament, falling victims to H. G. N. Lee and H. K. Lester (England). The New Zealanders’ defeat was an affair of baseline driving, lobbing, and smashing. The English pair were safer and more consistent. Andrews bore the brunt of tile attack, and Malfroy was below his best form. In the men’s singles R. Menzel (Czecho-slovakia) beat G. P. Hughes (England), B—6, I—6, 6—4, 6—2. The Americans, Shields, Allison,-and Van Ryn, were all victorious. Miss Helen Jacobs (U.S.A.), Miss Betty Nuthall (England), Mrs. Fearnley Whittingstall (England), Miss M. Heeley (England), Mme. R. Mathieu (France), and Mrs. L. A. Godfree (England) survived the second round of the women’s singles. Mrs. Helen Wilte-Moody won her third round. match, beating Miss W. M. C. Bower (England), 6—l, 6—o. Miss D. Round (England) beat Mlle. J. Sigart (Belgium), 6—2, 6—o; Mrs. J. B. Pittman (England) beat Mrs. R. Lycett (England), 6—3, 7—5. Other winners were Miss K. Stammers (England), Mrs. L. R. C. Michel (England), Mrs. D. C. Shepherd-Bar-ron (England), and Fraulein. Krahwinkel (Germany). In the first round of the men's doubles the results were:— H. G. N. Lee and H. K. Lester (England) beat E. D. Andrews and C. E. Malfroy (New Zealand), 6 — l, 4—6, 7—5, 6—3. J. Clemenger and C. Sprouls (Australia) beat J. Charanjiva and J. M. Lal (India), 6—3, B—6, 6—o. J. C. Crawford and H. O. Kopman (Australia) beat R. D. Poland and H. Watson (England). 6—4. 6—3, 6—o. S. B. Wood and G. S. Mangin (U.S.A.) beat H. Timmer and J. H. Knottenbelt (Holland), 6—2, 6—l, 6—X. I. G. Collins (Scotland) and J. C. Grigory (England) beat J. W. Nuthall ami C. R. D. Tuckey (England), 6—l, 6—B. 6—4, 6—4. R. Miki and J. Satoh (Japan) beat B. de Kehrling (Hungary) and C. H. Kingsley (England), 7—5, 6—2, 6—4. W. Allison and J. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) beat P. and J. Grandguillot (France). 6—2, 9—7, 14—12. J. Borotra and J. Brugnon (France) beat M. Bernard (France) and Ingrain, 6-4, 7—5, 6—3. Roderick Menzel first eame into prominence in 1926 by beating de Kehrling, Hungary’s leading player. Since then, in Davis Cup ties, he has had wins over such players as Satoh, de Morpurgo, Berkeley Bell and Alonso. He has beaten Hughes, England’s third player, previously. H. G. N. Lee and H. K. Lester, who have put out the New Zealanders, Andrews and Malfroy, are fourth and sixth respectively in the English ranking list
