WINTER SHOW OPENING

Guests of the Association The executive of the Wellington Winter Show Association invited a large number of guests to be present at the official opening of the annual Winter Show yesterday afternoon. The ceremony took place upstairs in the Winter Show Buildings, and the long Mil was attractively decorated with bright streamers in shades of . yellow and, orange. , \ There was a large gathering of citizens and their wives. The official party was seated on the platform at the end of the hall, where the same gay colour scheme made an attractive background. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, was accompanied by Mrs. Hislop, who wore a smgrt brown woollen dress under a brown musquash fur coat and a becoming Marie Stuart brown felt hat. The president of the association, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, was'. accompanied' by Mrs. Norwood, whose graceful frock .of brown satin was worn with a fur necklet and a smart brown hat. A beautiful bouquet was presented to each of these ladies before the speeches began. Although the words of the speakers were mainly addressed to those present who represented primary and secondary industries, their womenfolk appeared to be intensely Interested in what was said, and one point emphasised by all the speakers might have been directed especially to them. The stimulation of industry in this country by. buying New Zealand-made goods whenever possible is a matter in which the co-operation of women citizens is of the utmost importance. After the show had been officially declared open Mr. Norwood invited the association’s guests to afternoon tea, which was served at tables decorated with yellow narcissi in the adjacent restaurant. Afterward the manifold interests of the show itself remained to be explored as a conclusion to a very successful opening afternoon.
