EMPTY WHARVES
Scene Along Water front VERY FEW VESSELS The Wellington waterfront has been very quiet for the last two days. Ou Wednesday night there were probably, fewer ships in commission in port than there have been for many years past. When the Nelson and Lyttelton ferry steamers and the auxiliary scow’ Echo had left port, there remained only two vessels, the Government steamer Matai and the coastal motor - ship Kapiti, while tlie long stretch of wharves from the Railway Wharf to Thorndon breastwork was completely bare. The Union Company’s motor-tanker Otokia at the Clyde Quay Wharf, the coastal motor-ship Inaha. at the Queen’s Wharf, the Parera at the Dock Wharf, and the R.M.S. Makura in dock, all of which are out of commission, completed the.meagre list of ships in port. ■ - . ■ ' ’ ■ Last night the position was a little better, there being in port after the ferry steamers had sailed the Makura at No, 1 south, Tamahine at No. 4, the trawler Futurist at No. 7, and the coastal steamer John at No. 13 Queen’s Wharf, and the. Matai at the ferry wharf. The Otokia, which is ; to dock this morning, the Jnaha and. Parera remained as they were on We<h nesday.. . .
