FRENCH CLUB

Tlie “Cercle Francais” held its fortnightly reunion recently in the Pioneer Club Hall. An ' enjoyable programme had been arranged by Madame BendalJ, vice-president. Two excellent musical items were supplied by Miss Elspeth Barton (’cello), Miss Eyre (piano), and Mr. Richard Maunder (violin), who played Aarnsky’s “First,Movement” and later Beethoven’s “First Movement” in D Major.” These trios were warmly applauded and encored. Mr.. F. M. Bouillet followed. with a “causerie” entitled “L’harmohie du langage.”, which was much appreciated. Madame de Filippi read a short “fantaisie” by-Tristan Dereme, “Pataehou, petit garzon.” A new member, Miss E. Hadfield, gave a successful talk on the “Riviera.” Two songs, contributed ])y Mrs. Lionel Nelson, “Si je pouvais inourir” (BarboroUi) and “Serenade de Zanetto” (Massenet), gave much pleasure. , Miss Elspeth Barton, by request, gave two ’cello soloS, “Guitare” (Naskofsky and “Minuetto” (Hugo Becker). . The last part of the evening filled with an amusing comedy, “La paix chcz soi” (Courteline), in which the parts were taken bv Madame Germaine Lash (Valentine) and Mr. Balham’ (Triollet). This play was excellently performed and was much enjoyed by the large audience present. The conversation circle was capably conducted by Madame DechanetMaelntosh. Mr. F. F. Miles presided.
